Oncotype test for lobular cancer

I’ve recently had a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with a lobular cancer. I’ve had appointments with both the radiation and medical oncologists and now need to make decisions about the next stages of treatment. I didn’t think chemotherapy was on the cards because I have hormone positive lobular cancer but my oncologist has presented the oncotype test as an option to see whether chemotherapy would be beneficial. I’m wondering if there are others who have hormone positive lobular cancer who have had the oncotype test? It’s an expensive exercise.

  • @BrookeS I was in the same boat with regard to the mastectomy but there were still hard decisions to make about reconstruction, at least there’s been a few weeks recovery from all of that before processing this new round of information and decisions, it’s good to have all the options laid out, there’s lots to consider
  • Hi @JP46 I’m wondering the same regarding menopause and removal of ovaries.  Do I just go ahead and jump into menopause by removing them as I have already had an odd hot flush over the last year anyway. I think my oncotype would be the same and still not give me definite direction.  Having choices is hard.  I haven’t had a choice regarding the mastectomy, it was the only option being spread throughout the breast.
  • Hi @BrookeS we’re treading a similar path. I’m wondering if the oncotype is worth spending the money on because with lobular cancer I think it’s very likely to come back with a result that chemo is not going to be of much benefit? With hormone treatment I’ve been advised the post menopause drugs are more effective so it’s an option to have my ovaries removed to go into menopause. I’ve been offered radiation but it’s a choice, I’m in the grey area. My ki67 was 10% and I’ve had a double mastectomy. Really hard decisions to make!
  • @JP46 I’m in the same boat as you.  Breast surgeon informed me that the oncologist will offer chemo and it would give me 1-2% advantage with recurrence so doesn’t recommend it but I haven’t spoken to oncologist yet.  Wondering if Oncotype would give anymore information to make the decision easier.  My Ki67 was 5%.
I was originally told no chemo or radiation so I’m waiting on oncologist next week and see what he says.
  • The test should be subsidised, as it is to the Gov's benefit if it is decided chemo ISN'T necessary ... and saves them mega bucks in not proceeding with unessessary treatment costs in the public realm..  We did genome testing for my husband's cancer and it costs the same.

Mine was hormone POS Lobular .... but it was caught early, not in the nodes and good margins, so they decided I didn't need chemo, even without the test. Tho I did have radiation for 4 weeks.

@JP46 ... it would also give you peace of mind, which ever way the sticks fall.  If you find it a financial burden, maybe you could you ask our family members to 'donate $$' instead of birthday/Xmas pressies for this coming year ..  to help offset the cost?  Win/Win ... they would be happy to enable you to get the test done and you'd know that you'd done your best re ongoing treatment, if necessary.

All the best with your decision making xx
  • Not the same cancer as you but the test costs $5000 no rebate.
