Mepitel and radiotherapy

Hi,

I was diagnosed with triple negative bc grade 3 last August. Have finished chemo and had double mastectomy and axillary clearance in February this year. I start radiotherapy on Monday and would like to hear from those who used Mepitel during their treatment. I am wanting to use it from the 1st treatment. Did you find it helped and how long until it had to be replaced? Could you still moisturise, use cool packs and creams/gels?

  • Hi Jodie, I used QV intensive cream which i applied 3 - 4 times a day & also used salt water wash (1 tspn /1 litre boiled cooled water) which provided much relief!!.  Was lucky not to blister, but skin did start peeling at the end. Also used Dermeeze under arm pits to minimize friction/rash.  Not great for your clothes though!

    Hope you recover well.

  • Thanks everyone. I'm almost at the end of treatment sore, red, couple small blisters and some broken areas. My skin is not liking the sorbolene /  glycerine or other creams ointments they use. My skin is still super sensitive since chemo. Used moo goo in the beginning which some nurse were not happy with but now it just melts. What did others find useful?

    Jodie ??

  • Hi Jodie,

I had it put on at the beginning of my radiation treatment but unfortunately reacted to the adhesive. I then had to just rely on the creams.....it didn't end up so bad except for the blistering in the first two weeks following the finish of treatment.

Wishing you well...it sounds like it is the way to go if the option is there,

    Cheers

  • Hi Jodie

I used it and I did not need any cream or cold pack during the treatment. Two weeks after treatment I peeled the film off the area underneath was a little bit dry but no itchy or irritation and after few application of Moogoo Udder cream the skin is soft again.

However, during the tratment the film might peeled off in few places from the body movement and needed to be repaired by a nurse so adding to the cost in public hospital, I think that why they hesitate to use the film.

    Best wishes for your rad.

  • Hi jodie

I would definitely recommend the mepitel film. I had it put on the first session.  It remained on for the entire 6 weeks plus 2 weeks after. You shouldn't need to use any cool packs whilst its on as it does a really good job of protecting the skin. I was doing a fair bit of exercise during radiotherapy so bits would peel off due to sweat but the nurse would just replace any parts that needed it. Hope this helps and everything goes well for you.

  • Hi Jodie,

I wanted to use Mepitel film but was offered StrataXRT gel as an alternative.  The treating centre said that the film was time consuming for them to maintain: they mentioned peeling at the edges of the film and the difficulties involved maintaining the film over areas that aren't flat.  I felt that their arguments were based on inconvenience to them rather than any inconvenience to me if I was to suffer from radiation skin reaction.   Have you had reconstruction? because i understand that some of the difficulties with using the film aren't relevant if the area to be radiated is flatter rather than contoured.  It isn't routine where I am treated to use Mepitel (or the StrataXRT) so i took along the journal article and product information (both i found online).  The product info gave fairly detailed information about how to use the film and had some good photos that made it clearer for me.  The article mentioned that Mepitel had negligible bolus effect- one argument they were using to discourage  use of the film.  Someone in a previous post mentioned the film needed to be used at the planning or simulation session as well so ask early.  Anyway I started radiotherapy this week and am using the StrataXRT gel twice a day throughout treatment and for a number of weeks after.

    All the best
