Do I have to?????

Hi All,

I had an Autumn of AC chemo, then a winter of Taxol, and will be having a Spring of radiotherapy. I have read all the info I can about radiotherapy, and still have one question which I am hoping someone can put into really simple terms for me. Why, after having a mastectomy and axillary clearance (cancer in 4/24 nodes), then chemo,( which is a systemic (whole body) treatment to mop up stray cancer cells in the body), do I have to have radiotherapy? I don't really understand. Is it because chemo is not 100% effective? Yes I have asked my treating team, but I admit it still doesn't make sense.

Or maybe what I am really saying is "please, please, I don't want to have radio, I just read that you can get broken ribs from it and now I am really scared and anxious."

  • Hi Jane, I had four weeks of Radiothreapy.  They did use Mepitel film and I had no reaction or sunburn marks.  As we wanted to get away in our caravan 3 weeks after I'd finished the Radiothreapy specialist saw me before the usual 6 weeks and explained I will get funny pains in the breast I had it on, actually I got pain ( not bad) in both breast.

But it's so much easier then chemo.

I wish you well for your treatment time, keep us posted.

  • Hi just come on to wish you well. I  didn't need radiation so can't offer advice from experience.  I've found Moo Goo products great to use. There's lots of knowledge on here to help. Sending you a virtual hug and hoping it's not as daunting.

    Take care from Christine xx

  • NE, what is a mepitel.film and how is it used?

Sorry to be a pain but starting my radiation tomorrow and a tad anxious as super blonde and burn from lightest of sun exposures so with 35 sessions on the books for me keen to do whatever I can to keep burns and broken skin to a minimum

  • Radiotherapy is the actual best treatment for breast cancer. At least that is what I am being told by all the specialists.

They cannot afford to expose the whole body to radiotherapy (as.the risk of other radiation related cancers is too great and sideffects are pretty nasty) hence Chemo...

They save radiotherapy for the actual site where cancer was present.

I too am going to be having it - starting tomorrow and not looking forward to it at all. Going to have 8.5 - 9 weeks of it (35 sessions in total ??????)... But that is what ensures cancer is dead gone and burried so with Grade 3 not like I am about to complain.

I was suffering from a horrible candida / trush inside and out (another AC Chemo gift) so could not perpare the skin for radiation as advised since had to use trush creams (so kind fo really worried).

So spent the whole arvo yesterday googling organic calendula oils and managed to find a local company that sells it and planning to use it throughout. Been reading and seeing fantastic reviews of calendula / castor oil mix to keep skin going through cancer radiation so will be using it in addition to the Aloe Vera Gel (and will be hopong for the best). Also found many used Argon oil.so some organic Argon oil also on order... Plus am express shipping liquid lanolin from US as cannot find any in the liquid form locally...

Already stocked up on Moo Goo radiation for cancer products (skin wash, udder cream and sunscreans) and must say even though only been using it for 4 days acan see a massive difference in the skin in the area used so will continue with it as well...

I think pretty soon my skin will.be saturated with gels, oils and creams so determined to keep blisters and broken skin away for as long as possible... Well - that is the plan (can only.hope realoty matches it ??)

I hope your radiation is as pain free as possible

    Hugs

    Jel.

  • I think it is an extra precaution to radiate the area that were exposed to the cancer.  In case the chemo did not get all the cells.  Mostly because it had spread to nodes too.  I want to assure you that from all the active treatments, for me the radiation was a walk in the park. Get them to cover your radiation area with mepitel film so you don't get burned. It is amazing stuff! All the best x
