2 chemos down 4 to go.....

Found out my first 3 rounds of chemo will be using the drugs FEC. So after my first chemo I started to feel sick as soon as I got in the car and continued for the next week, really bad nausea, lethargic, heavy head. I couldn't believe how terrible I felt, and I started wondering wether. Was strong enough to do this. For the first 5 days I survived on toast, biscuits and avocado and water, I ended up losing 3 kgs. It was so good to finally get my appetite and feel some what 'normal' for the next 2 weeks. Before my 2nd round I went to see my oncologist about the side effects, as my next chemo was due on Xmas eve, and I was not going to spend Xmas feeling the same way. So he put me onto Olanzapine. Has anyone else had this? It made me feel very dopey and not quite with it, I really didn't like that feeling, but at least I didn't feel as nauseaous. What drugs have worked for other people? I can't wait to finish the next one as I've heard the red drug is the one the makes you feel sick. On Sunday before Xmas, 3 weeks after i started chemo my hair started falling out heaps. I'd always had long hair and got it cut into a bob shortly after getting the diagnosis because I knew it'd be easier to look after especially after surgery. So I called a good friend who's a hairdresser from home and asked if she could cut it that afternoon. I was thinking of just going for a buzz cut straight away, but decided instead to get a nice short pixie cut, which I loved. The following Saturday while staying at the beach with all my family I'd decided I'd had enough, it was still falling out heaps and getting thinner. So I got hubby to clipper it off to about a cm. I felt it to be a very liberating experience, i kept telling myself that it was going to happen eventually, it's just hair and it'll grow back. My 3 brothers, hubby and dad also shaved their hair with me. I'm in Cairns, so does anyone know about the wig voucher in Qld? I've been told good quality wigs are expensive, does anyone know where you can buy second hand wigs from? Has anyone else has FEC? What drugs helped you through the nausea and tiredness? What other things helped? Foods, drinks? Thanks ladies :)

  • I too am in Cairns and find it way to hot for a wig, although my hair has started to grow back (finished chemo Oct 26), even wearing a hat is uncomfortable but I do wear one when in the sun even if it is for a short period.

Was amazed to hear the Cancer Council don't do the wig voucher anymore.

I found cold lemonade really good to sip on as well as lemonade iceblocks, dry crackers, dry toast. I did crave bread for a while, strange as I am not a big bread eater. I put on 5kgs but also put that down my chemo TCH. Am happy putting on weight as I have always been on the slim side, When I first went to my surgeon I weighed 59kgs so that extra is just good.

Hope you travelling well with your next rounds of Chemo.

  • I have had 2 Chemo FEC.  Taken both Emend and Ondansetron for nausea, worked perfectly well to keep nausea level do-able.  Can return to natural healthy foods the day after, just small amounts.  Feel good by Day 10.  Dexmethsone I also take, and got a printout from my Pharmacy to discover it is a Corticosteriod.  It helps with inflammation and blocks allergic reactions too.  For once in my life Im not experiencing any Allergic symtoms: my personal miracle.  I can now smell an item across the room and wondered why while surrounded by flowers in this garden Im not suffering.  This could be why Im not having much of an issue so far?!  My hair fell out at same stage as yours, and I was a bit of a drama queen about it at first, having been a hairdresser for 20 years in my last Career, but as my friend Teresa said, got over it the day we shaved it.  I have to wait for 2 weeks for my wig to arrive now ordered.  Had assumed Id have it before I had to go bald and go out.  Not to be, but yesterday was my first time out in public, and I dont care now.  Good Luck and best wishes from Bel

  • Hi bmc, thanks for your reply. I've found out that the cancer council no longer do the wig voucher :( but I have an appt on tues at the cancer council to have a look at their wig library. I'd like to have a wig just in case. Sometimes it'd be nice to feel somewhat 'normal' and not have people stare. Hopefully I'll be able wear it in the heat in Cairns. I too have a collection of scarves that I usually wear, even though I do like my bald head as well. Take care
  • yes I've  been lucky, so far so good and no major side-effects but still have 4 more rounds of FEC. The red stuff, epirubicin, can be real hard on your body... Hope your next chemo is easier, do ask your onco beforehand to check the dose.  Annie

  • Hi Annie, you lucky thing, did you have any side effects? apparently the red one is the one that makes you sick? I'm glad I've only got one more. He did mention last time he might adjust the dose, but he didn't. :(
  • Thanks Jenn, I'll speak to my oncologist about those drugs next time. I did ask him about the Zofran but he said the Olanzapine which is also a wafer tablet would be better? Thanks again.
  • Did they not give you Emend for the nausea? FEC is a highly emetic regimen and anyone doing it here in Australia qualifies to get 3 days of a drug called Emend starting right before your infusion each time. Please ask for it next time... The other drugs that can ALSO be taken with the Emend includes compazine, Zofran. There is no reason for you to suffer so badly from chemo in 2013... Jenn
