Diep surgery recovery
hi everyone
I’m having double mastectomy and diep reconstruction in about 3 weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into recovery and how they managed once at home from hospital ? Are you able to move around the house yourself and do small things like make a sandwich ?
They have said to expect to be in hospital for 7 nights
Thanks!!

- kmakmMember@mum2jj I think I might be too. I've inadvertantly scratched the skin raw in a couple of places where it's come away. Desperate to get it off. K xox
- mum2jjMember@kmakm, glad you did. Great you got to the info forum. Lol re the vibrator!
sounds like you are slowly getting a bit of normality into your life. Good luck with the check up. I was allergic to the tape!!
Paula x - kmakmMemberHi @Eastmum. Happy to say my father-in-law had a better day today. Still hasn't moved his bowels though which is worrying him tremendously. I however, am finally close to achieving normalcy on this front! After over five months I can't tell you what a relief that is!
I'm not back up to full speed at home, but I'm back in charge of the laundry, which is a big job with seven of us in the house! My husband is on leave to the end of the week, so next week will be much busier for me. I did feel like baking today, it's a happy place for me, so I made a batch of wholemeal banana choc chip muffins. Everyone enjoyed those! Me in cooking the kitchen is very normal, hopefully it will help my niece & nephew settle down. It's been very difficult for them, their distress has been high.
Plastic surgeon tomorrow for first post-hospital check-up. I presume the nurse will take off all the surgical tapes and clean me up a bit. I do hope so, I am so itchy and irritated. It's driving me nuts. K xox - kmakmMember@mum2jj I did thank you Paula. And then I went to a BCNA Life After Breast Cancer information night!
It was very good. Hosted by the new CEO Kirsten Pilatti (who was warm, very likeable and clearly knows her stuff) we had three talks. One on BC and work, one on BC and exercise from a fantastic young exercise physiologist, and one on sex lives after BC. There was even a door prize... someone you know walked away with a vibrator!! Yesterday was not such a good day but I had a really good night's sleep last night and today was much better as a result. SO much hinges on our sleep eh? K xox - mum2jjMemberNothing wrong with an afternoon nap.
I love them.
Rest and rejuvenate.
Hugs.
Paula xxx - kmakmMember@iserbrown @tigerbeth @mum2jj @Finch Thank you ladies.
You're right Beth, the 'I'll just do this' syndrome would rear its head for sure.
I'm feeling a bit better today. Had a good night's sleep which definitely helped. I'm ever so slightly less sore in my abdomen but slightly more round my foob sutures.
Everyday round 4pm I hit the wall and have to lie down, exhausted. Otherwise, so far so good. K xox - mum2jjMemberDo not be embarrassed! You go girl. Whatever it takes....
paula xx - FinchMemberIt is for the best . It's all about you healing @kmakm. We all know what we do when we get home .... that one extra thing, that little bit heavier lift than allowed.,I'll just put the washing on the line . Empty the dishwasher ... and then regret it later when you get that extra strange twinge. This is giving you time for your body to heal and get extra strength. For you to re-group with your family under relaxed circumstances away from hospital. Time to walk around the shops and go for a coffee with family.
it is a generational thing .... parents are strange creatures, especially as their generation have been through the war etc, they expect so much more from their own offspring they wouldn't blink an eye at with anyone else, and as their adult children we don't feel comfortable with what they think. You have had major surgery . Enjoy, relax, have a break for goodness sake. You've had a tough few years. Before you know it you'll be at home and in the middle of family life with all it brings.
Youre father in law and husband understands , bless them.
Dont think twice anymore about it.
Hugs xxxxx - tigerbethMember@kmakm ,I'm so glad you did this !
Was wondering what happened to the rehab idea !
Hope you are making the most of the peace & quiet .
How are you feeling? Do not feel guilty you have such a load on your shoulders ,anything to ease you back into the fray has to be a good thing . You know as well as any of us that at home you would be "just doing this " & not fully resting
Your guys rock !!!
Take it easy xxx - iserbrownMember@kmakm Onya! That is a very smart thing to do - enjoy the break and nurturing thyself
Sometimes family, in your case father-in-law, surprise us when we least expect it!
Take care xo
