Build it and they will come

This morning I went out to drink my coffee in my semi-abandoned, wildly weedfilled vegetable garden. (I am not meant to get soil on my hands because it is full of bacteria and I am prone to pick up infections if exposed to them, so cannot get stuck into compost-making, or energetic weeding etc, so my gardening activities are currently very limited which is frustrating in a place where you have to constantly supply good food and water for the plants because the soil is pure sand and nothing more).

One project I began last spring was a watergarden/ frog garden within my 7 x 3 metre enclosed vegetable garden to put some life into the place. I installed a large galvanised tub, babybath sized, with a solarpowered motor bubbling oxygen through the water, put in a couple of pygmy perch to keep down mosquitoes, and planted a waterchestnut and some watercress. I asked everyone to keep an eye out for tadpoles for me, and went looking for tadpoles several times but never found any.

This garden is very much enclosed, with quarter inch netting all over it.but the walls were breached for a while over summer by a very persistent rat that dug up into the back bed from the outside, and had to be shown via well-placed concrete slabs that entry was no longer possible. Lugging these around when I was just post-surgery and should not even have been out there was a nightmare, esp as the little bugger kept finding new ways in. But he finally gave up before I did.

So this morning I was surprised and delighted to discover this new and valued resident sitting on the corrugated iron beside the little, pond, which is now overflowing with abundant supplies of iron-rich watercress and possibly even a few waterchestnuts.

He/she is a motorbike frog, so-called because they don't croak, they make a sound like a revving motorbike. I am hoping he/she has a friend or two, and may begin their own dynasty within my enclosed vegetable garden.

It seems that my garden project is moving forward, and coming to life, and working to feed me well on watercress, even in the face of such neglect.

I actually love frogs. We had a pet frog that we raised from a tadpole, and our children at the time, spent many hours catching moths, flys etc.to feed it.I have never heard of this type of frog, but how satisfying to find it in your garden :) Cheers Robyn.
