Drain & drain bag after surgery

its been 8 days since surgery & I am still getting 200/250ml output into the drain bag. Is this normal?
I change it everyday like I was shown. Most days I'm just sitting at my desk or laying in bed. On day 6 I did stuff, and obviously over did it as I was in more pain, lesson learned... I'm not doing that again!
Would that have affected the drainage output?
The bc nurse said that once the output is 40ml for two consecutive days, then the drain can come out.... & to change the bag daily. I only have 2 bags left though.

  • Thank you ladies. I spoke with the bc nurse & she has left another 10 bags for me.
A girlfriend of mine is calling past the hospital today & picking them up. I just need to get another friend to grab them off her for me. As long as I get them by Sunday morning I'm okay. The bc nurse wasn't concerned at all.
  • At least with the bags you can have the output removed but if you go off them too early for your body, like I did on the second surgery on underarm it will swell under the skin and need to be drained with a needle periodically. In the end they put a huge pressure tape on me to stop the pockets being filled up again so fast. With time it stopped doing it. What about a tight boob tube or singlet to hold it all firm?
  • I've left a message for a call back from the bc nurses. other than the fact i'm still draining longer than expected, all seems to be fine. My GP checked me over on Tuesday night, i don't feel unwell or anything. I'm tired, but that's to be expected due to anesthetic. I'm still awake for most of the day though, I can do basic things like making myself something to eat. I don't have extreme pain, etc. I am red & sore on some spots where I've had to keep moving the medical tape holding the drain tube as my skin reacts to it.
Everything else seems fine though. It's sore where the drain does in, but no more than it's always been. I sispect the stitches there have a lot to do with that, but nothing there seems red, sore or puffy - nothing to suggest any sign of infection. My arm is still numb & sore from whee they cut through the nerves getting the lymph nodes out, but not enough to stop me doing anything. I expect they had to push & pull a lot to get into those areas as there's no cuts to the skin there, so the pain is to be expected for a while I would assume. The pain isn't getting any worse though so i'm not really concerned about that at this point.
Hopefully they can just get me some more drain bags sent out & hopefully the drainage slows soon!
Do you think i'm taking longer to drain because i have this large lot of skin there instead of the lot being removed? The discharge summary says they removed 938g of tissue - they have left all of the skin & my girls are/were bigger than most, so i guess there's more space to fill? no idea if that's at all relevant, just wondering.
  • Give them a ring and ask for more bags, you should be able to get one of the district/hospital in the home  nurses (or what ever they are called where you are) to drop them off.
Drains can be a trial. I've had them go on for weeks, it seems some of us are more 'irritable' than others. After about 2 weeks the surgeon will usually want them out. Apart from the risk of infection, the drains have little slots in them and you can start to adhere to them and/or lose suction if they are in too long.
There isn't much you can do except wait and see. If the drains fail before you stop leaking you may have to have a couple of needle aspirations to get rid of any fluid that collects. Don't freak about that, it sounds worse than it is and it is really common. If you do find yourself in that situation, remember to take some sort of pain relief an hour or so before and you will be fine. We all hate the wretched creepy things. Marg
  • If its convenient, might be advisable to get some more x
  • Not until next week. 7th June is my follow up with the Surgeon.
I only have two bags left after today though
  • Yep....yellowish pinky....the clearer the better :)....contact the BC nurse or your surgeon....you'll be seeing someone soonish for post-op follow up anyway yeah???

ps I used to make jokes about the awful bag the drainage bottles were kept in...it was pink tartan...and I oculd never wear shoes to match hehe :))
  • It's definitely going more yellowish, but still some pink.
I may need to get more drain bags though
  • I had drainage bottles...and drained for about 10 days after my mastectomy. I guess I thought "better out than in"...it was a pain...but a necessary evil. Some surgeons don't like to go for more than 2 weeks as they worry about infection risk - will depend on your surgeon's pov.

The colour of the drainage fluid is key too - if it's going clearer (from red to yellowish to more clear) then that shows progress :)
