Hi friends,

My husband and I live on the mid north coast of NSW, at a little village near the beach. The ideal sea-change situation, with plenty of fresh air and tranquility. We have been here for 17 years, but all of these pluses has not stopped the big "C" word from entering our lives. I was diagnosed with breast cancer  early September and recently had a lumpectomy and lymph node removal. The pathology on this tissue did not have clear margins, so its back to the operating table for me. A single mastectomy is planned in two weeks time. At first I was really shocked, but I am starting to accept it now. When I saw my GP for the first time after diagnosis, I asked him if I could call it something else?? as breast cancer was just too severe...............

He said " call it what it is!!" so I have been slowly telling my family and friends............I have breast cancer.........I'm 51 years old and I have breast cancer just like my mum did. My mum suffered and endured for 13 years before she finally lost the fight at 55 years old. I'm lucky, I say, today we have so many treatments and new medicines, it's not like it was 30 years ago.My mum never had the opportunity to vent on an open forum like this one. She could hardly speak English and found it very hard to communicate with all her doctors and care givers. As a young child I had to help with the translations.

But back to the moment, to today, we are enjoying a walk along the beach, maybe with even some whales breaching in the ocean, the sand between our toes, and our happy dog "Milo" running in and out of the water having an absolute blast!. Staying strong and living in the moment, one step at a time, one day at a time.

Welcome Cashalina, I hope that your mastectomy is successful, and that they get clear margins this time around for you. BC is one of the most treatable cancers, and it is good that your doctor has found it early enough to treat. You sound like a very positive person, and have a supportive hubby too. Keep checking in with us, there are some wonderful people on this  site wo can give you moral support nd advice to boot. Glad that you're enjoying the sunshine, Trace ??????

If a walk on the beach counts toward well being and a cure I reckon it comes close. So uplifting, I just love it.

Waiting for a op date on mine. So much waiting it drives me crazy but that beach walking sure is good for the soul.

Hey there Cashalina. I too have family history and went through a similar experience with my mum. You are right we have much more support and treatment options than our mums did.  Try not to focus too much on the past but rather think positive about your treatment and future. With one step and appointment at a time you will be triumphant ????

    Hi Cashalina,

i am sorry you had to go back for more surgery but aren't we lucky to be living now with such fantastic professional medical support. I am 51 too I had surgery 15 July, just finished chemo and waiting for radiation to start and as I was replying to you I received a text from my McGrath Nurse to find out how I was today. This lifts my spirits I hope you have  this support too. In a couple of weeks I hope I can enjoy the sea breeze I know it has healing powers.

    best wishes

    Kim
