Finding or Starting Regular Perth Coffee Mornings?

I am looking for a regular local coffee group for women with primary breast cancer  in Perth.

I have been told that Mitchxx was kindly  trying to run a group but has had big health problems herself, and  has now got too ill to organise it  any more.

It is not fair to expect someone who is sick to do it.

Are there any other groups going around Perth?Or do we need to have another one started? How do these groups get started?.

    Hi Lily

There are a number of other support groups in and around Perth that may interest you or be what you are looking for. These groups have different focuses, our online Member Group directory will help you locate your nearest group. http://www.bcna.org.au/membergroup/search

The Perth/WA Women's group also has a strong online group with 63 members that continues to provide a range of support. http://www.bcna.org.au/group/25713

If you would like more information about face to face support groups or online groups, please call us on 1800 500 258.

    Warm regards,

    Grace

Hi Grace,  The Perth/WA Women's group/online group you mention is  the group that Mitchx took over from someone else and ran for a while. There used to be coffee mornings on every 6 weeks or so at Chris Nixon's place until the middle of 2014. But now Chris has gone back over East, so there is nowhere to meet, and Mitch is too sick to organise them any more.

We were going to have a get-together later in the year, and then a last one for the year, and then a new one for the new year, but she has had gallbladder surgery and is suffering from other cancer-related health problems and been far too sick to run groups. So of course she cannot organise them now.

I just thought I should speak out because we do need to get things happening again. And I feel it is downright cruel to leave this responsibility on this woman's shoulders when she is so ill.

Also, there aren't any other  groups anywhere near me. Maybe there is a need for a new one.Can you tell me how to start a group?  How do groups get started?

    Hi Lily

I haven't spoken to Mish recently, however I have spoken to other members of the face to face group and have been informed about her health.

We are confident that with a  large number of members in the online group and our support, the online group can continue. This won't be dependent on Mish to continue. Any member of the online group is welcome to post or encourage conversation within this group. Although the groups are linked, the online group and face to face group are seperate. The online group supports women from across WA, and has membership broader than those that meet in Perth.

I understand from speaking with co-facilitator of the face to face group that this group may be put on hold, but this shouldn't affect the continuation of the online group. Unfortunatley I am not very familiar with Perth and your location, however using the Member Group directory link provided, I found a group near to you in Midland. There may be other groups in the area, you can find your nearest group by using a post code search in our Member Group directory.

Alternatively, you could contact the Cancer Council who also have a directory of support groups.

Breast Cancer Care WA run a series of groups around Perth, they may also be able to assist finding a group near you.

Do you know Vicki Roberts, the co-facilitator for the face to face group? It may be helpful to have a chat with her about the continuation of the face to face group. If the group members are keen to continue meeting, you or other members may consider facilitating the group. Please have a chat to Vicki about the group's future plans, her contact details are on the group's page: http://www.bcna.org.au/membergroup/group/perthwa-womens-group

I hope this information helps, if you need more informaiton, please contact me via email at communityprograms@bcna.org.au or via phone on 1800 500 258.

    Warm regards,

    Grace
