hi
I have recently moved to Adelaide from Newcastle for work and have had a recent diagnosis after open biopsy last week.
i am having further surgery next week in the private system with an excellent surgeon who covers the gap, in a Medibank members choice hospital.
Likely to need radio, discussing that with surgeon today.
as all my family is in NSW, and I have a house in Newcastle, I would really like to return there for any protracted treatment I might need. I can work from there once well enough.
Can anyone recommend going either public or private in the Hunter, and if Private, which hospital is best, and are there any good surgeons, rediologists etc that cover the Gap?
Any location specific advice would be much appreciated.

Hi there. I'm in Newcastle and have gone private so far with all my treatment. I'm in the middle of my chemotherapy and see a medical oncologist at Newcastle Private Hospital oncology centre. He is great and although I have a gap payment for each appointment I have before chemo (think it's around $40 each time), all I had to pay was my hospital excess for the chemo. But if you have paid your hospital excess for the year already for surgery then you would have no cost I assume.
As for radiation I'm supposed to be going to Genesis Cancer Centre at Gateshead but in the process of working out if I'll still go private or to the Mater hospital which is public due to the cost which will be involved for private. More phone calls to make about it today as it depends on your fund cover also and I'm in the process of changing funds.
If you go to the Mater everything is under public and would be covered.
    Hope that has helped.

Who is the surgeon you are under ?
Good luck with it all xx

    Hi
am currently seeing Mr Robert Whitfield and have had and will have surgery at St Andrews.  So far only out of pockets have been radiology gap and anaesthetist.  Not exhorbitant though.
looks like radio will only be 3 weeks so now thinking I will stay with my current team.
got pathology today and tumour us tubular carcinoma which I now understand is one of the more slow growing ones.
    second surgery Monday.
    cheers
