When I paid for mine I wrote to my local member who was John Alexander and he sent it to the Health Minister and I had some scientist mansplain to me why it wasn't funded - I am a scientist myself so found it a tad insulting! Now that we have changed to Labor I may send the letter again. My surgeon said that in America the test is free but you have to pay for chemo. I am happy to share my letter if you would like to send something to your local MP. I have been told that Tamoxifen can cause cataracts or make existing ones worse. I am 45 and have some cataracts that I was born with so had these checked before I started Tamoxifen. I will be monitored every year unless I need it. I am finding that I get blurry vision more often, I am short sighted and can still read though and see things close up. I have only been on the drugs 7 months so who knows what will happen. I go see the optician yearly anyway because of the cataracts but it might be a good idea to get your eyes checked if you haven't already. @youngdogmum thanks for sharing - this information is so important for the government to know - if I didn't have the money for the Oncotype this could have been me. I wrote to John Alexander, MP for Bennelong, He wrote back saying he would write to the health minister on my behalf. He did this but because it was just before the election the government was in a caretaker role. So I got a reply from First Assistant secretary, Technology Assessment and Access Division basically saying MSAC hasn't supported funding for Oncotype "as the incremental benefit of the Ocotype assay over optimal care remains uncertain." There is a new consideration scheduled for August 2019. I can attach the letter I wrote and the replies for anyone interested. It's a great cause to support if you want to drop a line to your MP. Maybe I'll write to Greg Hunt too :). @StarGirl my 3 year old knows I had surgery and that's all. I am a useless liar and I felt like I wouldn't be able to hide the truth from my 8 year old. Thanks so much for the advice. I have been honest with her - once we knew I didn't need chemo we told her I had cancer. She has agreed that I can tell her teacher and a nurse today told me to tell her to write her feelings down so she liked that idea. Baby steps! Thanks again6Views0likes0CommentsImpact on kids
Hi everyone, I'm currently in week 5 of radiotherapy. My 8 year old daughter is struggling with my diagnosis and is showing signs of anxiety, lashing out a lot. She admitted she is worried about me and I asked her to tell me what she understands about what I'm going through and I think us talking about that helped. Me and hubby have told her the radiotherapy is killing any cancer that might still be there and she seemed happy with that..However she won't tell any of her friends and doesn't want to talk to any teachers or councillors. Does anyone have any tips on where to go from here or what to say to her to open up? I haven't been able to take her anywhere to do something nice as I broke my leg and cant drive.
