I had two drains for about three days, but I had a mastectomy. The drains were removed before I left hospital and were a slight nuisance but nothing more. If you have a lumpectomy, chances are no drains. But it's always best to speak to a professional - a breast care nurse if you have one, your GP or the helpline, as suggested, rather than worry. One of the early learnings about cancer is to avoid worrying about something you may never have! Best wishes.
I had a lumpectomy in April, I also overthought the whole thing. This site is helpul, supportive and reassuring. MY journey continued with a Revision and ultimately a mastectomy to clear cancers found in pathology.
I have a very close frend who is about 9 months ahead of me in her cancer and we support each other. I am not a group joiner preferring to chat with those that know me, also being in rural South Gippsland, travel deters. My breast care nurse is 75 km away, but available by phone (Tues -Thurs ) and this site is excellent.
Many ups and downs but " Vivere in Diem"...live for the day, this day and look for those little specks of gold in the poo of life, no matter how small they might be. Every person has a slightly different script, try not to dwell, BIG hugs and BEST WISHES. (Meurig, 5 )

If you are having a lumpectomy, you are extremely unlikely to have a drain. Those having mastectomies will usually have drains.
Try not to get ahead of yourself by thinking the 'what ifs' ..... they will most likely never happen & will only muck with your brain.
I would suggest that you call the helpline on 1800500258 for a confidential chat with any queries/fears you may have ...
Hi Ann58 , If I have correctly read your posts, you are having a lumpectomy on 26th August. Your surgeon is, of course, the appropriate person to provide information on exactly what your surgery and post surgery situation involves. I can only comment on my experience. After my initial biopsy giving me my diagnosis, I had a lumpectomy which involved an overnight stay. There were no drains involved and minimal discomfort which was easily managed by painkilling medication. Waiting for results was almost the worst part and, unfortunately, my surgery did not result in clear margins so there was further surgery etc to come (which did involve drains). Hopefully, yours will be relatively straightforward and I wish you a speedy recovery. Good luck!
