Surgery in the morning

The other thing abut the Zonta pillow (you can get one free through the breast care nurse) is that it is great to wear when driving to shield your wound from the seatbelt.

Also, be prepared and willing to accept help: I made a pact that I would say "yes" to anyone who offered help...a shop; some food; a visit; to pick up the kids. It made them feel great and really helped me out.

I was in for 3 nights, 4 days for my mastectomy...the best things I took in were:

- a Zonta pillow (helped rest my underarm, neck etc)

- a cotton scarf that i could throw over my shoulders at nighttime...when my legs were so hot and sweaty with those godawful inflatables that pump up and down to stop DVTs

- a shortish nightie that unbuttoned down the front

Hope all goes well and I was in 4 days as didn't do so well post anesthetic, I had bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction. Since you are already in...some tips when home. I lived in stretch bike shorts and big Tshirts and gave the undies a miss as it was easier going to the loo and since sitting so much no cutting into your arse. I had a chair in the bathroom to sit my 4 drainage bags on outside the shower and backup if I got dizzy...which I did frequently. Panadol osteo 3 times daily provided better pain management than normal panadol 4 hourly, plus some stronger stuff if a lot of pain, which I needed also.  If constipated  can't  recomnend movichol more strongly and it can be bought over the counter and possibly glycerol suppository to get the 1st brick out...it was the bain of my life post surgery. Nuts also help the bowel to get moving. Take care. Kath x

I hope everything goes well for you today and you have some great other patients to chat to. It sort of makes the time pass a bit quicker. I was only in overnight with a single mastectomy and they sent me home. Something to do with not wanting any hospital infections to get me and we recover a lot faster in our own beds. Take it easy and make sure you ask for some good strong painkillers to take home. I was told if you don't ask you don't get and this can be true in the hospital system. I hope the op went well for you. I had a bilateral mastectomy and was in 2 nights. Would've been one night but I had a bleed. 

Recovery was good for me. One suggestion is- to do the excerises they give you.

One of the ladies said to take a soft teddy to wear under the seat belt for driving home. This was a great idea for me as the last thing you want is a seat belt rubbing on a new wound. Goodluck!

Overnite for me as well, for a lumpectomy,

& yes, hospital gown only,  but remember your makeup & perfume ! Very important !

Bounced back surprisingly well, the surgeon did a fabulous job !
