BMX with ALN removal and SN biopsy.

Hello to all you lovely folks on here. I've had 6 cycles of THCP and I'm having BMX this Wednesday, with axillary clearance on the left and sentinal node biopsy on the right. Has anyone had the same? And any advice for recovery? Were you able to go out for a walk or is it mostly housebound at first? I'm also dealing with heamorroids so a little worried about that. Thank you and best wishes to everyone going through this.

  • Hi EJM

I had similar, but a bit less than what you are expecting - 6 cycles of TCHP, BMX (direct to implants) and sentinal node biopsy on the left only.

I was worried about surgery, but found it easier than the TCHP - so hopefully you  might find you've done the hardest work already!

I spent five days in hospital following surgery and it is difficult managing a surgical drain on each side - my drains came out before I discharged, but sometimes you keep them in at home (and the nurse comes to check/remove them).  You also have to sleep on your back for ages, but I didn't mind that too much.

In hospital I got up each day and went for a walk to the cafe or BC physio as an outing - you just have to take your drains with you!  I bought a surgical drain belt thing from Temu (for $8) to carry my drains, but your BC nurse might be able to give you something similar.

My surgeon and BC physio had both given me rehab exercises to do straight away and build up as you recover.  Speak to your medical team, but I would try and be active if you can.

I got an infection on my right (good side) and had to go back to surgery.  I also got some cording on my left side.  Both have resolved and I have excellent shoulder movement on both sides now.

I had rear end bleeding, presumably haemorroids, also (from the TCHP diarrhoea), but they had cleared up before surgery.

All the best for Wednesday and reach out if you have any more queries xx

Hi Suki, thanks for taking the time to write me with your experince and advice. Sorry to hear you had a couple issues post op, and glad it's all sorted and you have range of movement now, that's great.

I'm quite concerned about  medication induced constipation following surgery, given the aneastheitc and pain killers, but I've passed this along to my BC nurse who have passed it along to the surgery team. Otherwise, I think im prepared as I can be now. Just have to go one day at a time and hope for the best.

Thanks again, all the very best.
