Managing hot flushes & mastectomy?

Hi there! I’m 43 and just had my last round of chemo for her2+ breast cancer. I’ll be having surgery in 2.5 weeks, likely a double mastectomy. I’m Australian but I live in Paris, so it’s winter here currently. Whether it’s the chemo side effects or the chemo pushing me into peri-menopause, I’m having a lot of hot flushes at the moment and taking layers on and off. I’m a bit worried about dressing right and juggling this in the immediate aftermath of surgery. Anyone had similar? Any tips? Thanks so much!

  • While I haven't been through what you are going through BCinParis I had a lumpectomy a few months ago during a cold snap. I layered long sleeve  button-up flannelette shirts with zip-up fleeces and jackets to be able to take items off without too much stretching or wrangling. Zips in particular were quicker and easier to handle.

I cannot add anything really buit the hot flushes are awful. I am in Melbourne where the weather is very changeable and  I wear layers too. I wear a soft merino or cotton long sleeve t shirt underneath (unless it is hot.

I wear light jackets layered that have buttons down. the front and take things on and off.

      Wishing you all the best.

Another medication, called Oxybutynin (also used in bladder control for those with incontinence) has been successful in reducing hot flushes.
