To shave or not to shave

what are people's experiences? My hair is thinning but I still have quite a bit of hair at the back and a little hair that shows as a 'fringe' when I wear a hat. My scalp is sensitive and I lose hair every where I go. Should I shave or just cover it until more leaves? What have others done? How do you care for your scalp if you shave it?

  • I cut my long hair very short as soon as I knew I was going to loose my hair. Then it thinned but took a while as I had very thick hair. The Be Brave and Shave was coming up and I friend was raising money to shave her head so I went in and I did it with her. I got them to clipper it as short as possible as I didn't want a razor near my skin. Love my bald head but I still have quite a bit of hair, its just very very short. I thought I would just have skin but there is hair there. My friends love to touch it lol.

  • Hi Prudencerose,

like all the other comments it is about taking control. It was better after I shaved the hair off, I could wear wigs and hats and I washed in sorbolene. My head was cold so I wore a bamboo fibre hat at night. It has grown back evenly. I had my first hair cut since September last week. I was beginning to look like a pompom, it is extremely curly and sticks straight up! So I am keeping the hat on until it gets a bit more length. I really do look a bit wild. Hair, you can not live happily with it or with out it!

    Cheers

  • I shaved it as my hair looked horrid as so flat and lost its style.  It also hurt my s alp a lot less and much less stress when I washed my head. It was empowering to take control. Kath x

  • Hi, once I started chemo my scalp/hair became very sensitive. At day 14 it started falling out so I got the hairdresser to do a number 1. What a relief! Felt much better. Since then I have used baby shampoo to wash my little bald head & sorbolene cream to keep it soft & shiney.

  • Hi:) I had the hairdresser shave my head.I booked in for the last appointment, end of the day,and I took my lovely bamboo turban with me.As soon as it was done,I just popped on my turban and home I went.I never used anything on my scalp, just water when in the shower.I grew to love my baldness. It was easy!! No shampooing,no leg shaving etc.Cheers Robyn xox

  • Mine fell out pretty quickly two weeks after the first round of ac chemo. At first it was fascinating, but then I realised it was all going to come out anyway, so I clippered it with a number 4 clipper (so not right down to the scalp). I still have a little bit, but very fine. When it fell out it went from the front first, with the very back of my head the last to go.So I guess it depends on how much it annoys you to have it falling out all over the house, as opposed to cutting it off all at once where  you can clean it up quickly.

I too was told to use sorbolene on my head but I found it was too much, and I came out in pimples, which I treated with witchhazel. So now I just use a bit of baby shampoo every few days, and just water in between.

My scalp was also sensitive when the hair was falling out...very difficult feeling to describe to anyone else!

On the plus side....I knew I would  save money on shampoo and conditioner, but I filled up a whole bag of other assorted "products" which won't be used for a while.

    All the best

  • While I lost most, I didn't lose all my hair. I chose to have my hubby shave my head after my second chemo because my head was too sensitive and a little sore and I wanted it to grow back evenly.  As soon as it was shaved my scalp was no longer sore. I still used a drop of shampoo every day on my scalp and it felt great although a little cold until I got used to it. Now 6 weeks after chemo has finished I have soft fuzz covering all my head. I never regretted shaving it.

Best of luck with whatever you choose. Take care

  • Thanks for that. The chance of a nick does worry me as I have little pimples underneath the hair at the moment

  • Hi my hair was falling out after first chemo, by the time I got to second one my husband was picking it off my shoulders. For me this was more distressing so I made the decision to have it cut off. It was difficult watching it coming off. I actually got used no hair quicker than I thought I would. I had so much other stuff going on that for me my hair wasn't important anymore. I was advised by my oncologist to mosturise my head with sorbelene. My head got infected and was very painfull for about a week. My husband thinks hairdresser nicked my scalp as immune  low. This dosen't happen to everyone just bad luck for me.

Good luck with your descion your choice when you cut it off, it is different for everyone take care x
