Stopping Taxol

Hi there,  just saw my oncogists yesterday as I am on my 4th A/C next week.  Then will follow 12 Taxols.  When I asked about the side effects of taxol, doctor gave me some & he said once that there will be numbness, he will stop it & just take the hormone pill.  Was thinking has anyone here stop taxol on her treatment due to nueropathy? Tks

  • Hi I had 4 ACs was suppose to have 12 weekly taxols by 8th taxol I couldn't feel my feet - it was finally stopped then and I was glad.  I ended chemo end of Jan this year and finished radio in April.  Up until about 3 weeks ago it was still pretty bad so much so I couldn't drive or walk some days.  I did gentle massage on my own feet ( organic rose hip oil) and neuropathy exercises with both feet and hands tai chi at home finally I saw a neurologist and was relieved to receive the news that it was feeling based and not deep nerve damage - and I'm really glad it was stopped at that point.  I still have some numbness pain in feet but finally I'm getting somewhere.  I find it increases when I'm overtired big hugs everyone is different I have girlfriends that had no really bad effects from taxol on a plus note my hair grew back during taxol and for some reason my skin glowed - go figure xx
  • I already had issues with nerve problems so instead of taxol I had taxotere - still had an extreme reaction to it and had to stop but it may be worth discussing the pros and cons of taxotere with your oncologist.
  • I think its very individual, theres no two people completely the same in any of this. I did 4 rounds FEC 3 weekly and 8 Taxol. Taxol was definitely easier to tolerateBUT saying that, had horrendous muscle, nerve and bone pain which I do still slightly 9 months on. I developed mild neuropathy in my toes about No. 6, definitely didnt stop it though. My fingers were absolutely fine, no problem. My toes only very slightly, so much I dont even notice. Again, everyones experience is different.

When first I was given my Chemo regime, my Oncologist said if I was against Chemo he'd suggest doing Taxol over FEC only in terms of tolerance...but for him its the combination specifically that they give you including the hormone pill after it all.
  • I stopped Taxol after my 3rd dose due to severe neuropathy.  I remember sobbing on the phone to my Oncologist begging him to put me on something else mainly because of fear of irreversible damage to my nerves and my pains where quite severe after the 3rd dose.  A friend of mine who finished her taxol ended up with severe neuropathy pain and issues and she is 2 years post bc and still have pain.  So having known about her pain and suffering I was very very cautious and didn't want to end up with irreversible damage to my nerves.  My oncologist was happy to put me back on FEC.

  • I had A/C the 12 treatments of Taxol. The neuropathy started about the 7th dose. I stuck it through, as my oncologist felt it was the best treatment (assisted by finding a lump under my right arm, which mercifully was benign and quite unrelated, but it did make me think hard about stopping!). The neuropathy in my fingers is almost gone and causes no problems but after 3 and a half years I still have odd sensations (no pain) in my feet. It is still slowly improving. I'd always caution advice before stopping, but neuropathy can be serious and may take a long time to recover. No regrets (I got through A/C and Taxol with no nausea or fatigue) and the other Taxol side effects (loss of taste buds and bloody nose) stopped when the treatment did. Good luck to everyone going through it!
  • HI I had to stop Taxol after 6 sessions as I developed Neuropathy overnight and was like Jumping jackson..... I am 3 years since stopping and I still have problems with my fingers and feet... I notice it more when I am overtired etc. or sick.
I have my chemo changed then to FEC.  Ask questions be aware of changes to feeling in feet and fingers (tingling or numbness) Tell your team straight away.  I am the person who gets the allergic reactions to many drugs so dont be alarmed just be aware.
    hugs

  • I only had Taxol and not AC. Did 12 rounds of Taxol. Neuropathy is a side effect but its something that is closely monitored and should they feel that it is becoming an issue they will talk about stopping it or reducing the dose. I did feel some tingling in feet and fingers but nothing serious. Its been 5 months since I stopped Taxol and I still do have some slight sensations in my feet but they are manageable, nothing serious. I have been told that it can take a while for any neuropathy to resolve from Taxol but everyone is different and its hard to tell how you will react until you try it. The Neuropathy for me did not start till after week 8 or so. Hope it all goes well for you, doctors do need to give you the worst case scenario but my oncologist did say to me that he has not had many patients where he has had to stop treatment completely due to neuropathy.
  • Mine came in towards the end but completed it...just. feeling is returning now in my toes about 1 month after. I just had decreased sensation and slight balance change in the last 3 cycles. If it had been worse they said they would stop it.
