Sore Ribs

Hi lovely ladies, Was wondering if anyone still experiences rib pain after a mastectomy. I had a mastectomy last July and experience rib pain on the same side form time to time. I hadn't had it for a while but it's back again and I'm immediately thinking the worst. I feel like I'm going crazy - has anyone had similar even 6 months after surgery, Thanks in advance for advice, Sophie xx
  • Hi Friends, My diagnosis was Invasive Mucinous Carcinoma grade 2, had a lumpectomy and 3 titanium clips planted and Sentinal node biopsy. My rib pain started 2 weeks after finishing 21 radiation treatments, making that since early February 2014. First site was under the treated right breast, pain of feeling deeply bruised. By April I had swelling from fluid, pinkness on the breast and more rib pain on my side and above my right shoulder blade. I was checked by ultrasound and x-ray with nothing found and I was advised by my surgeon and GP that it is all radiation damage. It is worrying because I keep feeling the pain is so like pain from a kick to the shin that it should be getting better.. But it that goes on and on, can't lay on that side at all now and am now not wearing a bra as the pressure is too much. I purchased a new long line bra but it still wants to roll up and put increased pressure on the ribs. I am having massage for the fluid, have tried Panadol Osteo and Voltaren without relief. Anyone else experiencing this side effect of radiation that no-one tells you might happen? I was told about the possibility of a broken rib but not this rib pain! Thanks for allowing me to unload.

  • It's been 10 years since my radiation and over 3 years since my mastectomy on the same side and I get discomfort.I have adhesions apparently and my bra tends to rub across a rib making it quite sore on occasions.Maybe you've changed bras or maybe you lie on your mastectomy side in bed? Both those will aggravate my ribs. There is bound to be a logical explanation but if it persists then get it checked out for piece of mind.    Tonya xx

  • I have always had a tender spot on my ribs since my mastectomy 81/2 months ago. I know the surgeon had to scrape this area to get a clear margin so this has been explained as the reason for the tenderness. I also have scaring and fibrous tissue in this area which probably affects it too. It took a physio and two doctors to convince me this area is not anything to worry about! It has been stirred up by radiation also. If you are concerned get it checked out so you can put your mind at rest. Deanne xx
