Neulasta Injection, Bone Pain & Claratyne

Hello - I start my first chemo on Tuesday, 4 sessions of DD AC each fortnight, followed by 12 weekly doses of Paclitaxel.

Of course I am pretty anxious about all of this and, like everyone, wish to mitigate side effects.

From reading this wonderful forum I have seen that many women took the antihistamine Claratyne with good results, to deal with bone pain from the Neulasta injection.

Could you let me know if you took Claratyne during both DD AC and Paclitaxel treatments after Neulasta shot? If so, how soon before the Neulasta injection and how long after?

Today is Sunday, so I can't contact medical team until tomorrow and will check.

Just wondering now about your experience and if I should start taking Claratyne soon.

Grateful for your views,

  • I didn't need neulasta on taxol as it didn't have the same impact on wcc as the AC did as it was weekly. You have weekly blood tests to watch it.
  • Hi @Zoffiel - thanks for writing. Fingers crossed that the Claratyne will work for me. I appreciate your comments.
    xx
  • Hi @Tinkat, - thanks so much for writing about your experience.
I hope you continue your treatment with little side effects - and I hope my experience will be like yours.
    Cheers,
  • It didnt work for me unfortunately so alot of epsom salt baths for me and panadol or the stronger stuff when it was too much and I needed to be up and about. My massage chair helped but so did a small massage roller ball $5 from kmart to roll over my limbs and shoulders. Best wishes. there is an end to it!
  • Start the claratyne the same day you start your steroids --makes it easier to remember though you do need to take it at least a day before the colony booster. Keep taking it for a week. Some oncologists say it's rubbish and doesn't help. Please ask anyway, I've never heard of anyone being told not to take it. Reactions to the neulasta vary wildly, bit for me it was the nastiest part of the whole Chem fest. Mxx
  • Hi @Tinkat,

I took claratyne the whole way through taxol. Some people find it very helpful for the neulasta but it did nothing for me, and I reacted horribly to it the first time so I stopped taking it.
I found the AC cumulative as well. The last dose was the hardest and took me about 10 days to recover.  But thankfully that was the last one.  Interesting about the vitamins.  I got told to no supplements at all while on chemo.
    All the best

  • Hello, I have just completed my third chemo with DD and AC.  I have been managing with few side effects but did take a little longer to recover this third time (last Monday) feeling ok for this weekend.   I am also having neulasta and haven't tried Claratyne, just assumed the issues were related to the heavy pollen around, no nasal hairs etc. Have been blowing my nose a lot with the sniffles but it's manageable.  I am taking the anti-nausea medication for the first 4 days as prescribed but really not wanting to add additional things unless I have spoken to my oncologist.   Will be interested to see what others say.  I have found the neulasta very helpful and apparently the VitD plus multi vitamin (one a day) has seen my blood tests coming back ok each cycle so far.  I haven't had any bone pain as such so far and if I am a bit achy, take a panadol osteo in the morning or at night before bed.
