Mouth ulcers post treatment

I was wondering if anyone else has issues with mouth ulcers post chemo? I finished chemo 12 months ago but still get a sore tongue regularly and mouth ulcers. Also oral thrush is hard to get rid of. I’ve had lots of courses of anti fungal tablets. Very annoying! I eat well, drink loads of water and exercise. I never had a problem before the chemo.
  • I've been on Exemestane and Herceptin for seven years and mouth ulcers are a regular side effect. I tried the usual mouth rinses given to me by the oncology nurses and my doctor. At times its very, very painful and at other times just a bit of a nuisance. The only treatment that gives me relief is bi-carb soda mouth rinses.
  • So true @Fightingfit, worst things can and have! Nonetheless it is annoying. I'm a clean eater too, no sugary drinks, a glass or two of alcohol on weekends and the odd bit of chocolate. It's definitely the constantly broken sleep I reckon. I hope it improves for both of us. *she types while having her seventh hot sweaty flush for the evening*  :#
  • Hi @kmakm. That pretty much sums up my last 12 months too!! I don't sleep as well as I did pre chemo but I saw a kinesiologist who had me on zinc drops and a good daily dose of magnesium and my sleep improved dramatically. Night sweats do wake me but I just tell myself the tamoxifen is doing its job! I had doxyrubicin then taxol followed up by radiation. You have probably hit the nail on the head that the mouth ulcers are part of being run down and its just a reminder that i haven't bounced back like I would like to have. I just couldn't work out why I was still getting them when I eat quite clean, don't drink sugary drinks etc and I do look after myself most of the time. although I am partial to a wine and a tim tam!!  I hope its not a permanent problem but we all know worst things can happen!
  • Hi @Fightingfit. I am getting more mouth ulcers than pre-BC. I've put it down to the fact that my sleep is now rubbish compared to what it was before. Two more night's sleep and it will be the first anniversary of my Breastscreen callback letter and the last decent night's sleep I had. A year of insomnia, nightmares and multiple ferocious hot flushes waking you multiple times a night will give you mouth ulcers from being permanently tired and run down... But hey, maybe it is a long term chemo effect. What sort of chemo did you have? Do you sleep well?
