Constipation!!

Hello, I am asking anyone how they have managed constipation. I have always had a very slow moving digestive system, probably agravated by an underactive thyroid but I thought the chances of me having some trouble with going to the toilet might arise. I had my first chemo FEC last Wednesday  ( of which I am doing very well ) but haven't used my bowels in over a week. Can anyone tell me if it's safe to take Laxatives?. I am feeling quite uncomfortable. TIA.
  • I've tried prescriptive medications, over the counter preparations, fruit and vegetables etc, the only thing that works for me is broccoli - soup, stir fry or steamed.
  • Movicol works awesome for me. I have been this round going between constipation and diarrhoea having to use gastrostop.

  • @Trikki2 hi thanks. After that first occasion I actually ended up going on a daily basis. Not diarrhea though thankfully. My system seemed to work itself out without any assistance. I will be watching more carefully for my second cycle though. I think I will take something the same day and hopefully that will offset any more complications. xx
  • Just be aware @Suzi_S61 , your next cycle could be completely different.  I never knew whether I was going to have constipation or diarrhoea each time, and I did end up with both once.
  • Yes I joked with doctor that I had constipated diarrhea.  He was not amused.  Lol.
  • @Harvey1903 I know what you mean. Sometimes these Doctors don't have a funny bone. I said to one Doctor when discussing radiotherapy I should just apply a really good 50+ sunscreen. He looked blank. My partner and I chuckled and we moved on. In his defence he was asian so maybe didn't understand the local humour. I have a really close friend who posteda snap of a tv screen above the urinal in a hotel and I said to him it was probably for men with prostate problems. Boy did I get a roasting from his son in law. I put him back in his place though cos I  said I actually have Breast cancer so this isn't about disrespecting someone who has cancer. Its just toilet humour and a reference to the length of time spent in the loo. My friend sent me an apology. I just think sometimes people have lost their sense of humour around us. Yes we all get its serious but we have to find the funny bits to keep us going šŸ’– don't feel guilty for seeing the funny side.
  • @Kellie hi just wanted to check in and see how you are going after your second cycle? I hope not too bad. I am due for my next session at the end of the month. Looking forward to that with trepidation.
Hope the bowel problems are minor. xx
