Bladder urgency with Arimidex/Anastrozole

Hi guys

Has anyone else noticed 'bladder urgency' whilst taking AIs?  Arimidex in particular?

I've always prided myself on having excellent bladder control - but in recent months, I've noticed that now, when I need to go - I need to go QUICK .... or I have a little dribble on the way!  I've been on Arimidex for 12 months.

I see my Onc next week & will add this to my list!!
  • I don't think they would help me, @Dory65 - as my pelvic floor has always been very strong!  :(

  • Do pelvic floor exercises help? I must try to remember to do them! Bloody Tamoxifen  :#
  • Thanks for that list @arpie....🥴. I think I would rather not know!! The problem for me is after carrying and giving birth vaginally to 4 BIG babies I already have stress incontinence. The nausea is not completely gone following chemo, the vaginal dryness and stinging started with the chemo induced menopause and the hot flushes are awful ..... and I haven’t even STARTED on the tamoxifen!!! I don’t wantbto think of it all getting worse 😊. But I do want to live as long as I can so guess I will be enduring it as best I can, just like everybody else.
  • @arpie, that is exactly what happens to me. When I need to wee  it is immediately or I pee myself. My oncologist told me what happens is our urethra dries out in menopause and is a lot shorter then mens. It irritates the bladder. What annoys me most is I like to go walking for exercise but don't get far before needing to wee. A shortage of toilets along the way is a problem lol. My oncologist put me on ditropan to take three times a day. It helps relax the bladder but it makes me so tired and shocking dry mouth. I cut them down to one at night which isn't really working great. They also help with hot flushes which is good as I wasn't having any and now they are back. You win one way but lose another.
  • I found a 2011 study (2500 women over 1990 - 2010) and the results were summarised as follows:

Mild to moderate urinary symptoms are common in breast cancer survivors and some women report severe symptoms. Symptoms appear to adversely affect women’s quality of life. There is a need for additional research assessing the natural history of urinary symptoms using consensus definitions and validated measures in diverse populations.

The study indicated that 58% of women participating had some degree of urinary problems, bladder control being common and most had mild to moderate symptoms.

May be more out there that’s more recent (American study) but it’s not all in your head!
  • @LMK74 - that's a real bugger.  I am OK at night (so far - tho have had the odd dream that I was actually ON the loo & have had a little dribble before waking up!  LOL) and only seem to have the problem at day time so far.  I've been menopausal for 25 years now & it has only just started!  grrr  Very annoying.  I may need to get some thin panty liners just to be on the safe side!

I've never had kids either (I know that a lot of women become dribbly after giving birth.)  I've always been proud that I could even stop  a pee 'mid stream' if I needed to .... but now - it is almost like gravity.  Sometimes I stand up & need to get to the loo almost immediately & even being 30 'footsteps' away from the loo - still don't make it in time!!  Luckily just a little dribble - but still annoying as I SHOULD be able to stop it!

I think I will add it to the 'side effects' list @ddon !!

  • I've noticed the same thing since starting Tamoxifen.
  • Hi @arpie,
I have experienced this now quite badly for the last 18months or so. I have been on arimadex since December 2017. I'm also on zoladex injections since I was not menopausal at diagnosis. I am 46 and feel like old lady with this problem. I cannot hold it or I pee myself and can't stop. At night I have to wear heavy duty pads as I often wake up and have wet myself.  I never had any issues before all this shit. My oncologist said it is from being put into menopause. I hate this shit so much lol.
    X
  • Interesting, @iserbrown - luckily I am not experiencing pain with urination - just sudden urgency, resulting in leaks.  In the old days, I could 'hold it in' for some time .... but not now!   :(
