Anyone else had this?

Chemo nine days ago: awake with dex, asleep with chemo, yada yada yada. Turned the corner and could go without a nap, feeling normal, yeah.  BUT cant sleep at night, feel like I'm wired. Not anxious, busy during the day, exercising each morning. Take  ages to get to sleep and then awake during the night. I firmly believe there is nothing a good sleep cant fix so why am I so wired, feel like my biorhythms are off.
  • I usually have 4hrs of good sleep and then 3 hrs of rubbish or no sleep. Surprisingly,I function ok on that. But if I get fed up I take an over the counter sleeper called Restavit. This might only happen every few months or so.
  • I'm an insomniac now, diagnosed as a 'mother bear' , one eye and one ear open all night long! When I take a Temazepam, I find myself looking forward to at least 4-5 hours of deep sleep and I then fall asleep more quickly.Mind over matter perhaps but I feel so much better the next day. I take a couple a month so am not worried about dependence either. I had to take the same pill recently during a daytime procedure and it only made me heady , I figure I had too much adrenaline pumping for it to take effect!

  • As a long term poor sleeper (predates chemo by decades) anxiety about getting to sleep will possibly keep you awake more than anything else. If you don't fall asleep relatively quickly, do something that may help lull you to sleep. I am not a fan of the 'getting up if you are not sleeping' school of thought, I'd be up all night. Sudoku in bed stops my mind chatter - not anxious or worried, just awake and thinking of too many things so I need something to turn me off. The old fashioned hot milk (Milo or Horlicks) can work so can some sedative teas. As far as I know valerian isn't a problem with other medication (always wise to check). I find that if I have been sleep deprived for a while, I need to take sleeping pills for two consecutive nights to break the 'I'm not going to get to sleep' cycle.  I may then not take them again for a month or more, not really much risk of dependence!
  • Thanks, I did take sleeping tablet and then got worried it was addictive and maybe thats why I couldn't sleep. Back to day time naps.
  • Yes. That describes my experience of chemo precisely. Insomnia is a side effect. I'm so sorry. You can try your luck with the GP for some sleeping pills. I eventually got some Temazepam. They help you go to sleep but only for about four hours and you're not supposed to take them more than two or three times a week. K xox
