AI side- effects
Hi all,
recently commenced and AI, and wondering if side- effects reduce over time. I was feeling pretty good, but since starting have had trouble sleeping, felt a bit down and stressed out and tired, achy hips and ankles and on an emotional roller coaster again, keep putting on weight... any advice or tips.

Bloody Breast cancer is the gift that keeps giving.
I also feel like I can’t multitask or remember stuff, it’s 1.5 years after treatment, for me, I think I feel pretty good, then have a set back....

- arpieMemberBeing older and already having arthritis even before this shitfight started ...... I may have copped it 'more' than others - but my Onc (after I changed to a better one) was terrific & I tried 2 other AIs & the current one is working well for me.
And also ..... remember that those who DON'T get side effects often aren't on the blog any more, so we don't always hear the 'good stories'! ;) - AllyJayMemberRemember too that if all women googled the potential side effects of pregnancy and childbirth, the human race would probably die out. Let's begin with A. Acne, bloating, candidiasis (thrush), diarrhoea, eclampsia. foetal death...and so on all through the alphabet. Most women get few if any. I've been on letrozole for four years now, and have other medical issues which affect all the connective tissues in my body. So, muscles, tendons, joints, blood vessels, internal organs...the lot. I can honestly say that although there has been an increase in joint and tendon issues, my feeling is that they would have deteriorated this much over the last four years in any event...letrozole or not. Other than that... my "lady garden" has dried up from formerly being a bounteous oasis, to now being sadly, the Gobi desert.
- FLCloverMemberI’m glad you’re restoring your fluids @Not_good_63_57. Have a great sleep tonight. Everything seems better in the morning 😊
- Thank you ladies
yes I’m prob thinking into it too much been coping well so far it’s hard but I’m getting there
bit light headed tonight but hardly ate or drank during the day bein at hospital most of day but I’m drinking fair bit water now with feet raised
hopefully better day tomorrow
but Thankyou once again all advice is greatly appreciated 💕💕 - AfraserMemberDear @Not_good_63_57
Just see how you go - different people, different reactions. I do have some side effects but they are manageable and compounded by being older. I don’t have any aches, pains, flushes or anything else of the sort. None of the side effects make a difference to my day to day life. Best wishes. - FLCloverMember@Not_good_63_57 about Letrozole, it def has its side effects. It is the best one, but a lot of women have a few of the side effects. You can def get on with life, but they do make it a bit harder and slower and more painful. It’s manageable though, so don’t stress. You might not even get any, and they won’t appear overnight. So you’ll have time to adjust and take action as necessary. There’s lots of advice on the site about managing side effects too, so you’ll be fine 😊.
- arpieMemberTry not to 2nd guess it, @Not_good_63_57 ... give it a good go and you’ll find out if you are one of the ones that gets the side effects or not. You can also change to different AIs if you are not tolerating it well. Some women get absolutely NO side effects!! Grrr
Take care and all the best xx - Oh wow now I am worried
I start on Letrozole and Palbociclib tomorrow had my bone injection today got told all side effects too
but reading some of these comments getting bit stressed got told by doctor and chemist girl
at hospital that these two tablets are the best and suit most people with hardly any side effects that u can get on with life
mayb I’m stressing too much bout it - kmakmMember@bell59 I hear you sista, I hear you. I've been on Letrozole for two and a half years and bloody hell it's hard. Before BC I wasn't a natural pill taker and it still bugs me, however, anything to help me keep taking the AI.
I take two drugs to help with the ferocious nuclear hot flushes, and gosh they have. It's such a relief. I still have them, but not as many and much more bearable. I take something to help me get to sleep as the Letrozole gives me insomnia. I also take anti-depressants and see a psychologist. Both she and my GP think I need to be on them until I stop taking the AI. I was upset about this at first but am resigned to it now. And I take a shit ton of panadol osteo as required to manage the bone and joint pain.
The other thing you can do is take a drug holiday on a regular basis. My oncologist (brilliant, excellent) says taking three months off has no impact on the efficacy. So with her blessing I take two months off Letrozole after every 12 months on it. The side effects don't disappear overnight but they do ease.
I am determined to stay on this wretched medicine for the minimum of five years. But I completely understand those who ditch it. It's a really, really hard drug to take. Big hug, K xox
