Zometa

Sorry, at 62, I'm not really au-fait with blogs etc. but couldn't see any other way of asking my question. I have been taking Arimidex & Bondronat without obvious side-effects (slightly greater tendency to have hot-flushes but not severe) but was finding the "rules" for taking Bondronat annoying (waiting the half hour meant I started doing other things and would almost forget the Arimidex). I decided to try the infusion Zometa, thinking once a month would be much easier than a daily tablet. 2 days after the first infusion I had such severe back pain which didn't let up that I called the Cancer Centre and asked for advice. They said that what I was describing was not a symptom of Zometa. It went on and then I thought about something I had done on the day of the infusion which might account for back pain and went to see a chiropractor. Very gradually the pain lessened and by the time I had my 2nd infusion, it was pretty well gone (still felt slightly when getting into & out of bed). 24 hours after the infusion I felt slightly nauseous, unable to eat (very unusual for me!) and a bit achy all over. I thought these were the flu-like symptoms mentioned as possible side-effects and went to bed expecting to feel better the next day. Instead my upper back (esp. left side) was again really painful (not quite as severe as the previous month) and has now been so for a further 36 hours with no obvious sign of improvement. Otherwise I feel well again. Now I'm wondering if it is in fact a side effect of the Zometa infusion, in spite of being told it wasn't by the experts, and am asking if anyone out there has any experience with Zometa infusions or aching back problems (I have had lower back problems before in normal life but not upper back around the shoulder blade). I hope someone can shed some light on this matter before I need to decide whether to go back to the tablets or stay with the infusion. Thanks for "listening", Nellie

  • Hi afer reading Nellies blog (and me being just the other side of 60 aswell) it has encouraged me to ask my own question so here goes. I have just finished my first 12 months on Tamoxifen and to quote "NOT HAPPY JAN" I have put on about 4 kilos and am having the most horfific hot flushes imaginable, just as bad during the day as at night. Does anyone else have these problems? I am still working be it only part-time and I walk my dog about 3 times a week for an hour, my diet hasn't changed that much since B.C. even my sweet tooth didn't come back completely, I can take it or leave it (chocolate that is)  My sister-in-law suggested I try wild clam cream she said it helps her with her "hottie moments" but on reading about it not sure if it is for me or would it interfere with the Tamoxifen. Has anyone any other ideas I would really appreciate any advice.

  • Thanks, Amy, so do I. I have finally been able to get to my physiotherapist so we're working on it. Best wishes, Helen

  • Hi Nellie

The achy bones only lasted 24 hours and then fine after that.  Like I said, haven't had it since.

Hope you can sort your aches out!

  • Hi Amy,

How long did you have the achy bones after the first infusion? I had scans not so long ago and they showed that the Arimidex & then Bondronat were doing their job and had halted the growth of the tumours - in my pelvis & my lung. Neither of these tumours has caused me any pain whatsoever, so it would seem strange if something so painful had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I will see a physiotherapist this week. Maybe the back injury has simply flared up with the achy bones and with a bit of physiotherapy maybe I can fix that problem before the next infusion. It's interesting that you only had the reaction once. Maybe I can hope that it will get better with each time. Thanks anyway for your response.

  • Hi Nellie

I've been on zometa for 5 months now and haven't had any of those side effect.  I had really achy bones all over after the first treatment but nothing since then.

Has anyone suggested a scan of the area?
