Wholistic Treatment! What does this mean and what are your experiences?

Hi All,
I wanted to start a post to share wholistic treatment stories and share info on things that have supported you during active treatment.

I'm all for medical intervention however I also highly regard treating the whole condition that is our cancer and giving our body the best shot at fighting.

For me outside of my medical team I also saw a naturopath who specialises in breast cancer patients, a lymphodemia physio, and an exercise psychologist.
I took a mini getaway after each surgery and celebrating the wins was important to me.

What are your supports?
What else helped during treatment?

  • I regularly went to a cranial osteo who helped my headspace as well as dealt with the physical pain that was occurring from some botchy procedures. I tried to continue with my natural oils but found they couldn't compete with the toxic chemo regime.
  • Hi there
i had my radiotherapy at Genesis Care in Darlinghurst in Sydney.
The package included free sessions for acupuncture and exercise at the Kinghorn Wellness Centre.
I also saw a physiotherapist who specialised in breast cancer patients.
I found it all very helpful .
I understand acupuncture does not work for everyone but it it was a revelation for me.I was pretty sceptical going in but it really helped with my pain .
the only person I didn’t see was the nutritionist but I knew what to do there and have done it.
that’s not to say others might not benefit.
I figure you need to throw everything you can at this beast.
  • @Michelle_R totally agree the small wins and exercise makes all the difference. My bestie was my exercise physiologist and she said even if i cant be bothered and super tired to crawl around my bedroom if thats all i could do.
You wil get stronger as you go. I think the biggest thing for me was i needed to also know when to stop and rest. I'm my worst own enemy sometimes.
  • Hi @NewBoobsPLS,

Totally agree. Early in chemo i found everything a bit clinical and i wanted extra support. I also think something in me clicked in (some sort of survival thing) of wanting to get the best outcome for myself. I started exercise physiology, got a gp plan for a dietician and did the lympodema checks.

I think the diet part helped me feel better. The exercise part helped my body feel stronger and gave me energy. The exercise physiologists provided a supportive, fun atmosphere which made my spirits higher. I still go now and will until i feel well enough maybe to yo to a normal gym.

Physically i am not where i want to be. But im hopeful things will improve now.

I also agree about the mini rewards. I was looking fwd to new years to celebrate finishing chemo and my birthday to finish radio. Both times it was not quite as i imagined but having something to look forward to is a big thing mentally for me. Small wins.

Family has been a  massive support. Im reflecting now on how hard it has been for everyone else. I kept a fb page with only the closest friends and family. It has been my journal through good and bad. Ive had a cheersquad.

Ive enjoyed chats here and fledgling friendships, understanding, care.

Humour also important. I follow lizzy_england in instagram and she is someone who has been on this path, who can make light of the situation who i admire. Younger than me 30.

Im looking fwd now. I hope to be feeling really well in a few weeks and enjoying the outdoors, exercising and socialising.

    Michele
