Vitamins

When is the best times to take the different types of vitamins during and after treatment. Do you stagger them throughout the day and what do you take?

  • I asked about supplements when I started chemo and my Onc said most were okay except large amounts of Vit C and A. He also had reservations about Glucosamine. I had some veg and fruit combination tablets too that he said not to take as they contained some sort of natural bacterias that he said might be an issue with low immunity levels. I am waiting for my bloods to come back as normal after finishing chemo, then I am going to start a good dose of Probiotics.

  • I scored the perfect blood test the other day which is all I can hope for. OK it did show overactive lymph activity which they have no idea why but the rest was perfect. During my ops it was noticed I have a tendency to be low in potassium so now if I haven't eaten a banana in a few days or they are out of season I have the odd potassium pill from my hospital pharmacy. I also take two vitamin C, a D3 and a high dose magnesium. I have been having them every morning with breakfast and my Tamoxifen so I must be doing something right.
Interestingly, I hadn't been grocery shopping in a while and our fruit supplies and veges were pretty much gone when I went shopping yesterday. I splurged and bought cherrys, strawberries, peaches, red grapes and cut them all up into a dessert last night. The effect to my body was astounding and I had so much energy I stayed up until 1am! I better stick to fancy fruit eating around lunch time I think lol.
  • I take my Vit D, Vit B and Krill Oil with my Arimidex at breakfast time.
If you are wanting to take any supplements during your treatment it is very important that you check with your oncologist. The whole point of chemo or radiation therapy is that it destroys cancer cells (and sadly lots of good cells too) and as appealing as it might sound you really don't want to take anything to counter this that hasn't been approved by your oncologist.

  • Hey Gerry!

I drink water with 350g magnesium and half teaspoon of Caltrate first thing in the morning. With breakfast I take my Aromasin(used to be Arimidex, but theyre both the same uuugh) Vit D, C.   Magnesium would be the most important vitamin anyone could take. The Caltrate is for bone health. The Vitamin C helps the absorption of the Vitamin D.

I took zero vitamins/supplements through Chemo as felt wouldnt have done much good really, chemo kills everything, so I felt it would have eradicated that too. So it was only once I completed chemo they started me on Vitamin D and have taken it from there.

    Hugs Melinda xo :)
  • I take 5 Vit D spread over the day. 2 fish oil at breakfast, probiotic twice a day and a couple of other things spread over the day. Usually take with a meal.
  • I take all my vitamins after breakfast,  caltrate, curcumin and rm10.
I also take a probiotic tablet first thing in the morning.
I'll  give anything a go if it means improving my health  and well being,  i hope what i take  is of benefit to me as they all add up in cost.
    Take care...xxx
  • Hi @Gerryb, I take all my vitamins after breakfast with the Arimidex.  2 calcium, 2 glucosamine, a vitamin C and powdered magnesium in water. On Fridays I also take a compounding capsule of 25000ic vitamin D.  My body doesn't make B12 so I also have the pleasure of a B12 injection every 2 months.
I was having the magnesium drink at random times during the day but it made me queasy.
    Jane xx
  • I stagger them, but mainly because I take quite a few tablets and am not sure about swilling them all at once. I take vitamin D night and morning, magnesium ditto and Q10 (recommended by my cardio people) in the morning. I don't think the rest make much difference when. I only take what's been recommended by medical staff though. Some vitamin supplements do little good.
