Three questions - picc lines, flu shots, inner health plus

Here are three questions I forgot to ask my MO on Monday. Hoping some of you may be able to help. Three questions:

For anyone with a picc line - do you feel it once it is in there? Does it restrict your movement at all ie can you still raise your arm and put shirts on etc? What about carrying children?

And what's the go with flu shots whilst going through chemo? I know that we want to avoid all sorts of viruses because our immune system is down but is a flu shot a good or bad idea? I meant to ask my MO at the last appointment but so many other questions took over.

Finally, is it ok to take probiotics such as Inner Health Plus whilst going through chemo?

Thanks

  • Definitely no to probiotics as we are trying to avoid too much bactetia as our body has trouble keep the correct amounts in check. Same reason as avoiding real yoghurt and fresh soft cheeses.

Re the flu Vax. ..it's  not a live vaccine but my oncology nurse wasn't sure about this either and I need to check with my oncologist also regarding this. I think it might need to be checked with him or the oncology nurse for sure.

  • It's interesting, I had to fly to get my last lot of chemo each time.  My onclolgist told me to definitely get the flu shot and so I did.  I think every oncologist has differing opinions about it so best to check with yours. He was quite insistent that I got it though.I had not yet started chemo when I got it.  I used to drink yakult every day when I did chemo, but best to check with  your oncologist also.

    Good luck.

  • I asked my Oncologist re flu shot & she said I had to wait 4 weeks after my last Chemo cycle before I could have it...

So, Im having it Wednesday.... 4 weeks & 1 day after my last Chemo... yay!!

  • Hi. My onco and GP suggested myself, family and friends that visit get the quad flu shot.

Maybe you could ring your onco surgery and ask your questions to his/her nurse.

  • Hi

My daughter has had a pic line in for 4 month and finds it fine she carts her 9 month old nephew around and raises her arm fine it doesn't bother/restrict  her at all.

I asked today at chemo about flue shots and they highly recommend them so we are all getting done next week.

I also asked about probiotics and they said to ask the onco as some say yes some say no each patient is different.

Funny how everyone gets told different things you would think they all went to different schools and read different books.

    Cheers Sue xx

  • I am making everyone in the family take a flu shot plus went to the chemist and ordered couple of boxes of masks...

When I explained that I was about to start chemo and wanted masks to protect myself at work during flu season they were very understanding and promissed to get them for me at cost price.

Do not underestimate the power of those masks - made hubby wear one last year when he had the flu to protect me when at home and we managed to avoid my getting the flu even though he had it.

I am allergic to the flu shot and cannot have it myself so masks have been a great way to deal with the 'nasty season' for the past few years :)

  • Hello

The picc line - is it a port inserted inside body?  My port took a little while to settle down.  It was attached to a muscle,  wish they had told me sooner, so gentle movements for a while. (Couple of weeks) I always knew it was there (abut 9 mnths), but it was no bother.  Probiotics, took them for all of chemo etc.  Think new research recommends them, but as always check with onc (or nurse maybe since you forgot).  I got no nausea probs, sickness, neutropia (excuse spelling) the whole time, 4 AC + 4 Dox/hercepton,  always wondered if the probiotics helped with this.

    Best wishes

  • Hiya,

I just had an oncologist appointment today followed by third dose of ac chemo, and I asked her whether I should have the flu shot. She said no, just try to stay away from sick people and observe hand hygiene and general cleanliness, which we should all be doing anyway. Maybe she could have added "and keep your fingers crossed"!

    Hope you are going well
