Taxol

Hi ladies, I've just finished my four AC treatments - yay go me :). I will be starting Taxol this week which I will be having once a week for 12 weeks. My anxiety levels are starting to rise ahead of Friday going into the unknown again. What can I expect side effect wise? Is it easier than the AC ? Any advice, tips etc much appreciated

  • Taxol - completed - yay go me!  Thanks again ladies for all your advice.  I had my last treatment last Friday and it was pretty smooth sailing.  A bit of a dodgy tummy was the worst that it got so I got lucky.  Did get very tired towards the end but it was so much easier than the AC.

I have been rewarded with four weeks off before I start radiation although I get my tattoos tomorrow which I'm really not looking forward to :(

Thanks again - I hope you are all doing well.

  • Still got your sense of humour Perky which is good to see :)  My neighbour has just started her radiation and she is doing really well although a little tired.  She thankfully didn't need chemo and I think with what you've done, I agree with you, it will be a breeze.  Good luck with your tattoo's - from what my neighbour said, this is the most unpleasant part so take a deep breath :).  Well done you for getting through as much as you did - another reason to celebrate seeing the end of chemo :)  Take care in the rest of your treatment, I'm not far behind you.

  • Hi LIggyW

I had the same chemo regime as you. The Taxol was a breeze. The AC hit me like a brick and put me in hospital. Pretty awful stuff.

Complete opposite with the Taxol. My head hair started to grow back. I was really well, still had funny taste buds but could eat so many more foods. I did get a really sweet tooth though and put on 8 of the 12kg i had lost. Naughty me!

My blood counts stayed stable - although they were below range. I went back to work 1 day a week and loved it.

I didn't take the Dexmethasone as we don't get along. I felt sick while I was being infused but I took a lot of anti-nausea medication and that would hold it at bay then I would go home and have a big sleep. Would be sluggish the next day then fine.

No fatigue, I was booming with energy. I did have the neuropathy kick in from abt treatment 8 or 9 but it wasnt too bad. 2 months later it is still there but I can live with that.

I hope the Taxol goes well for you. It goes so quickly when you look back. Just think of that manr, the journey of a thousand miles is made of single steps.

Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Good luck Liggyw for tomorrow.  I worked through weeks 2 & 3 of EC as well but I have a modified program for the Taxol and work from home the day after treatment and the third day which is great as I can rest when and if I need to.  My employers have been very supportive and this way we both win.

  • Thank you all for your advice. Thanks for being so honest Perky about your treatment and I'm sorry to hear that you had such a crap time :(. At least I can learn from your experience and speak up early if I'm having problems. My oncologist said that the 12 weeks of Taxol are really the icing on the cake and the AC that I had is the important stuff and it's ok if I'm not able to finish the 12 weeks due to side effects. I'm now armed and dangerous and ready for treatment number 1 on Friday :). I'll llet you know how I go. Thanks again Leigh
  • Thanks Maureen your response has given me a much needed boost. I was able to continue working through my AC albeit not the first week after treatment but definitely for weeks 2 and 3 before the next one. Hopefully I will be able to work all the way through with Taxol and return to even more 'normality' ha ha. Surprised to hear that your hair is growing back during Taxol. If that happens to me it will be the biggest boost. Thanks again for your encouraging response. Fingers crossed I will have an easier time than the the AC. Leigh
  • I had 12 weekly Taxol, and didn't have any major side effects - in fact didn't have any until right at the end with some neuropathy in my toes and some light-headedness.

It is really important to take the pre & post medications you will be given, as it is easier to prevent side effects than to fix them.  The Dexamethsone will probably have you cleaning the house at odd hours (we all seemed to!) but the insomnia only lasts while you are taking it, and no nausea is worth it.

I hope you have a trouble-free 12 weeks.  Keep taking your temperature and report anything over 38.  I found that green tea with ginger slices and an Arrowroot biscuit first thing in the morning very soothing (ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory) and playing a meditation cd helped with sleep when on Dex.

All the best - hoping it goes really well for you.  Big hug, Michelle x

  • Hi Liggyw

Ive had 2 doses of Taxol after 3 x21days  doses of Cisplatin with little side effects. No vomiting have put on 3kilos

First  Taxol plan was every 21days but had such huge side effects they changed it to the weekly Paclitaxel (2 types of taxol).Day 2 after treatment started with bone pain in ankles, that night had bone pain up knees to hips eventually ribs.Buring foot pain walking on hot coals, toe nalis being pulled out. Then period pain and Diarrhoea 4 days.constant mild headache fog brain Did not leave house for 12 days for 10 of those days only walked to toilet..Now find out this is worse case scenario and should have called doctor instead of trying to last situation out,But all these symptoms were mentioned in the cancer booklets just thought I was unlucky to get so many at once.

Sodia crystals as foot bath help with burning, moisturise & having feet elevated.I took pain relief tablets.Keeping off feet.leaving shoes off so I could see my toes to convince myself nothing was pulling on my toe nalis

Had 2nd lower weekiy  dose  last week with little effect keep creaming feet and some peeling is happening tired,  a little breathless, smidgin headache some pain tablets first night with little tingling(ants crawling over feet}tons better than first time.Have another dose today 11/02/15,

Expecting repeat of this time though in truth a lille anxious, not having so much pre dose dexamethosone  as I did so well last week.

Sure you will be great, the weekly doses seem much better or I'm being a princess but not like the ones in Frozen.

  • Hi Liggyw. I had the same chemo as you 4 x AC and 12 weekly taxol which I finished a bit over a week ago. I found the Taxol much easier than the AC although side effects were a bit different. I was more tired on taxol with the exception of chemo night when I was often awake for most of the night because of the medication given during treatment. By the end of the 12 weeks the side effects had started to become a bit more of a problem, especially the neuropathy but overall I still found it easier than the AC. Good luck with the rest of your treatment. I hope you find the taxol easier too.
