Still waiting on Full Treatment Plan

Well, I have Lymphoedema of the left breast. I have had some swelling over the last few weeks since surgery, but although there are no problems with under the armpit, my breast especially around the nipple is very painful. I had afew doctors check it out yesterday and the breast care nurses, and all are saying that it's not infected so no antibiotics needed. I have been shown how todo some lymph draining massages which hopefully will help me. It's quite painful and I have to wear my surgical bra as well as a special boob tube that I was given. Gosh, it's all so tight now I feel like I am wearing a corset.

Pathology results so far , oestrogen positve, Her2 negative, low grade cancer. 3 nodes taken out, 2 were clear and 1 had a small micronet which they are still looking into and doing more tests. The doctor said I will most likely have todo radiotherapy but not until the breast heals from the Lymphoedema and hormone therapy with Tamoxifen can start today. I can't take any other hormonal medication because I already have rheumatoid arthritis, so enough aches and pains in joints already.

So, treatment plan not finalised pending other tests but I really was hoping that yesterday was the day I would get the okay to start and get on with all this so I can finish treatment. Oh well, it seems I have to wait abit longer.

  • Tonya , chocolate is a fav of mine and I am not much of a drinker really. Just the occasional Brown Brothers Sweet Wines, like " Cienna " so I agree a nice bath with a candle burning and some nice choc's would help relax me for sure.  I saw My GP yesterday and she said to take half the tablet for 2 weeks and then take it as normal, just as the Oncologist said afew days ago. Well, I decided that until I get I get a  treatment plan I won't take it. Most people have the hormone therapy after their treatment has finished. So hopefully soon when I know what treatment and when it finishes, I can start Tamoxifen.   Glad to hear that you are well.

  • I didn't start Tamoxifen until treatments were over. You are wise to hold off until you know your treatment plan. The brand I take is "Genox" so yours sounds different but don't worry, most women are fine with any brand.I got a facial rash and bad headaches when I tried another brand -just me! When I was having radiation(in 2003) I would come home and soak in a warm salt bath and it would soothe and reduce the burning/swelling.Add a nice smelling candle and a glass of bubbly(or chocolate!)- instant stress buster! However,I didn't have alcohol whilst having radiation and only have it occasionally now. Hang in there. Tonya xx

  • Hi Tonya, yes I feel very disappointed and fraustrated too because the Lymphoedema will now delay everything. I still don't know what treatment plan I will have as they are still doing other tests. Hopefully I will have an answer next week. The doctors told me yesterday it will more than likely be radiotherapy and hormone therapy. At this point I just want to get started and hopefully finished in afew months.

Tonya, the doctor gave me the script for Tamoxifen yesterday to start either today or the beginning of next week. I thought you normally start hormone only after you have finished chemo or radio, or both , then you start the hormone Therapy. I obviously haven't yet done any therapy so I thought it strange to start the hormone stuff now. I have decided not to start the tablet until I see my GP tomorrow. The Tamoxifen tabs that I purchased from my local pharmacy today has the words " Tamoxifen " GenRx on the bottle. Are these the ones you recommend.? He was originally going to put me on Arimidex but then I reminded him that I have rheumatoid arthritis so he put me on Tamoxifen.

A warm bath sounds wonderful but because my breast is so red and swollen at the moment I am abit reluctant . But maybe I should give it a go. My husband says it's a great idea. Thanks for your good  wishes Tonya I hope I hope I get over this hiccup so I can begin my treatment soon.

  • I tell you, this crap bc journey has more twists and unexpected turns than a theme park ride. After my mastectomy,I kept getting fluid buildup where my boob used to be.I had to have it drained twice a week for 5 weeks and then it settled down.So it's quite possible to get fluid in your breast after a lumpectomy. With my first breast cancer,I had a lumpectomy and then it was about 6 weeks or so before I started radiation. They wanted me to be all healed beforehand. When radiation started,my breast swelled up abit at first but then it seemed to settle down- just ended up glowing like a hotplate! If you are starting Tamoxifen, can I recommend the brand"Genox".There are different carrier chemicals in each brand of Tamoxifen and some didn't agree with me(possibly Titanium)but Genox did. Also,I recommend starting with a quarter of a tab each day for a few days, then half a tab for a week and then the full tab a day.My oncologist said it was good to "ease into it".This hopefully avoids vaginal spotting but no guarantee. I wonder if a warm salt bath or even Epsom salts bath might ease your  sore swollen breast? It would be relaxing in anycase.Hope you are on the mend soon, gentle hug, Tonya xx

  • Hi Donna, it's abit disappointing having a treatment plan delayed because of this Lymphoedema. It's very painful and with all the exercises I was doing I still got it even though it's in the breast. The boob tube thing along with having to wear the surgical bra is uncomfortable and my chest feels abit like it might explode. Anyway I just took it off for awhile so I can do more of the massaging lymph exercises. It feels good as I can breathe. !!

Thanks Donna, I will take care of myself and let's hope next week I hear more about my treatment plan. I hope you had a good day.

  • Its all a waiting game and its so not fair, but they need to get all the correct information so informed decisions can be made. We know all that and I am sure that we all agree but its still hard to be patient.

Interesting I have learnt something today I never knew you could get lympoedema in the breast. Good luck with the coreset thingy, my sister has it in her leg and she has this stocking she wears and I know how difficult that is I can't imagine a breast one, my mind is boggling at the thought.

Take care of yourself it won't be too much longer.
