Starting TAxol tomorrow!

Hello lovelies,

I am starting TAxol tomorrow and I am anxious, nervous, scared and petrified.

Should I be worried??

  • I'm 3 infusions in on paclitaxol. So far I'm finding the dried out sinuses an issue as it has caused bleeding noses. Saline spray has helped immensely. I've managed to catch myself a cold on this last week which won't be helping the situation.

Compared to the 8 weeks of AC, this has been a lot easier. I'm actually feeling "normal" which feels weird anyway. I'm hoping the remainder of this treatment goes as well. Jen.
  • I had diarrhea for the whole twelve weeks I was on it. Had to be near the toilet and mostly stayed home. I have a bit of tingling in my feet and calves and numbness on and off in the fingertips. No nausea at all. Good luck.
  • I did not do well on Taxol, but I am through and out the other side and the side effects are reducing every day.
So even if it is unpleasant for you, know that once you are finished, things can be better.
I had to carefully monitor my temperature as on day 4-5 it started to climb and I ended up in hospital for the first two infusions. (I had it 3 weekly) then the Oncologist had the bright idea of putting me on oral antibiotics on the evening of day 4 and with a couple of Panadol on the two occasions my temp started to rise, I stayed out of hospital.
Neuropathy in my lips and tongue were unpleasant, but went on week 3.
Neuropathy in three middle fingers of both hands but not too bad and still there 6 weeks after last infusion. The Onc said that will take a while to go.
Metallic taste and no taste buds were particularly depressing, again, better on week 3.
My finger nails have turned brown and are weak, so I keep them short. The thumb nails have thickened and gone black in places but that will grow out in time.
Leg weakness was a big issue but is getting better each day.
I had diarrhoea from day 1 for 9 weeks, very demoralising, but now is cleared up.
Dry skin also had to be monitored and moisturising was very important, everywhere!
Dry bleeding nose was better when using saline spray from chemist, and only around week 2-3.
I still have swollen legs and feet but am on Lasix and they are finally starting to look better.
It wasn't a pleasant experience, but the side effects are going a bit more each day.
I think I got more than my Onc expected.

Good luck, I hope you have a better experience, and come on here if you are struggling with something, there will be lots of advice to cope with it.

  • Hi Katherine, I didn't have any problems until the 12th week, and that was a bit air-headed and dizzy - not painful.  Be sure to take your pre and post medication - it is better to prevent side effects than to fix them.  I also found that slices of fresh ginger in green tea, with an arrowroot biscuit, really helped in the mornings - no nausea & ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory.  All the best, you can do this. xx
  • @KatherineH you wouldnt be normal if you were not a little anxious. However the nurses carefully monitor you for any adverse reactions. Initially taxol was fine and then progressively I got more fatigued and had some side effects.
Once you get used to it it becomes very normal. The other plus in my case a few ladies  and I were seeing the same oncologist so we would run across each other  in the waiting room and chemo sessions.
It felt like a sisterhood of sorts.  Initially ii is actually fear of the unknown once you are used to it.... well you just turn up and look forward to when it is all finished and you are free.
  • Most people find it easier than other chemo therapies but it's all variable. I didn't get fatigue or nausea. If you get tingling in the fingers, get some advice on how to minimise it as this side effect can linger. You may find it's much more manageable than you fear. Best wishes.
  • They will give you a premed before it's started. Rarely nausea us an issue. You might feel hot / flushed first 24 hours. After about cycle 5 I started with more reflux issues but easily sorted. I just got progressively tired and fed up having it mainly. I developed a few other problems tbat most people don't get.  Report all issues as arise. Everyone is different. I think most people find it okay.
