Sleep please

I had first round ac chemo Monday and have not managed to sleep much since either night or day - the sleep is really affecting my mood and making the nausea and other side effects worse. I think it’s the steroids and I have called the hospital and could only leave message. Any tips? I’m contemplating antihistamine as I don’t have sleeping tablets or similar...
  • I had no issues sleeping when going through AC day 3 I always hit a wall a slept at the drop of a hat. My Onc prescribed temazipan ( sleeping tabs ) just in case and also Melatonin ( natural option ) I still take melatonin when I need to switch off at night, you do need a prescription for it as the over the counter options aren't true Melatonin. With any chemo treatment though always check with your Onc before taking anything. Good luck with your treatment
  • I was also prescribed Ativan for nausea after the first AC and like Sister, they give me a good nights sleep.
I don't need them now as I don't have nausea.  During AC, I seemed to sleep in one and a half hour bursts. When I woke up my nose seemed to be awfully dry, so I uses paw paw cream on a cotton bud which definitely helped with my breathing and I was able to drift off easier.
After the AC finished my sleeping more or less went back to normal, so hang in there.
  • @skzz I had my first AC on a Thursday afternoon and by Saturday I was unable to lay down for very long as it would make me feel so ill, and I was unable to sit up due to what I call "jellyfish syndrome".  I didn't know that I could call anyone as it was the weekend (from Hell) - I found out later that I was wrong and that the chemo suite always had someone contactable - it sounds like some definite feedback required for yours although I know that's not helping you now.  I rang the oncology clinic first thing on the Monday morning.  I live a long way from there and, while it took some phone calls to organise, my onc wrote the scripts and they were faxed to my local chemist where I could get them filled easily.  Immediate relief.  By the way, my onc prescribed me Ativan for nausea which had the side benefit of making me very drowsy, and Somac (later switched to Nexium) for reflux.
  • I used canabis oil that seemed to counteract the high from the steroids and allow me to sleep. Still using 6 drops at night and am 2 years since diagnosis x
  • @Skzz Don’t allow yourself to be dismissed. Lack of sleep makes it hard to manage everything else. See your GP if no one else is available. Big hugs
  • DON'T take any other medications (antihistamine or any herbals) unless ok'd by Oncologist and Pharmacist, it could have severe negative effects on your health. Only take what's been prescribed for you.
I know it is tuff but unfortunately it's part of treatment it will hopefully settle soon and before you know it you'd have slept for three days, basically all day, that's what happened to me.
You'll get through this, I promise.
  • Thanks I’m definitely hanging out for the end of the week and hoping to feel much better real soon. I’ve rung the ‘don’t feel well line’ a couple of times and feel a bit dismissed and get different advice depending on who my husband or I talk to. Will wait for a while and if I don’t hear back will call again - I guess being a Saturday doesn’t help and I am just one person among many who need much more help than I 😔
  • Lack of sleep makes life very cranky. Side effects from the AC usually start wearing off by the end of the first week. Definitely speak to your onco as she may be able to suggest something for future rounds.
