Seems so Surreal ..

It's only been 4 days since my GP delivered the news I have Breast Cancer in my right breast.

It seems so surreal.

Can't help but feel a little angry with myself that I didn't go for that mammogram when I found the lump 12mths ago.

Just kept putting it off & putting it off  because I've been focused on supporting my teen daughter with her mental health issues for last 18mths (she's a chronic self harmer) & keeping my family together in the process (I have a 13yr old son & husband)

Anyhow, I'm off to the Specialist tomorrow (with my husband) to find out next steps, recommendations etc.

Seems ironic that I will be the one going to hospital for medical treatment & specialist appointments rather than accompanying my daughter to them!

  • Hi

You are spot on when you say it is surreal! It took me a whole 12 months to get my head around it all.

Dont beat yourself up about the mammogram. We as women generally put everyone else before ourselves. I went to the doctor the next day after finding a cyst and it turned out one of my tumours (20mm) was inside the cyst as well as having two others.  Thank goodness I didn't ignore the cyst as my breast surgeon said I would have been in real trouble had I waited until my next mammogram that was due in 4 months.  The important thing is that you have done something about it now.

The thing is that now you are going to have to put yourself first. It's a hard lesson to learn. Tell all of the women you know your story. It may stop one of them putting off their mammogram and might save someone's life.

Good luck tomorrow with your specialist appointment and for your treatment. Karen xox

  • Hi Melhay,

Welcome to the network.  You've come to the right place for support and advice.  It's a great place to vent and ask questions.  The early days are very surreal.  Don't be hard on yourself about putting off appointments to check lumps.  I think I did that too.  Others have always been a priority for you.

All the best with the appointment.  Glad to hear your husband going too to ask questions that you may forget. Have you received the 'my journey kit' from bcna?  I found it invaluable.

Be kind to yourself in these early days.

    Karen xx

  • Thank you for your kind words & for sharing your experience Karen. Thank goodness you got those cysts checked so quickly!

I am feeling so very relieved & hopeful after my 1st specialist appointment today.

He said the 1st cancer tumour appears small & localised & the 2nd 'suspicous', tumour that the FNA couldn't effectively diagnose is more than likely benign. He took a core biopsy just to be sure. Will find out results on Fri.

So at this stage I'm looking at a lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy. Follow up treatment 4 - 5 weeks of radiation therapy.

Feeling very very lucky & relieved indeed!

  • Thankyou so much for the warm welcome Karen :)

I have ordered the 'my journey kit', just waiting for it to arrive.

Thank goodness for this site in the meantime though - the last few days of just waiting  (& wondering) to see my specialist for the 1st time have been very challenging indeed.

However reading the medical info & others womens' experiences here before going helped me feel informed & confident regarding what to expect from the appointment.

    xx

Hi Melmay, it's good that you have a diagnosis, and can get on with your treatment plan. Sounds like you have some good support around you. This network is very supportive. Take care, Tracey B xxxx
