Scans post adjuvant chemo

Happy Friday afternoon everyone!

As I am having adjuvant chemo as opposed to neoadjuvant, how does one tell if the chemo has been effective?

Do they do tumour markers/full body scans at the end of chemo?

What is your experience? I cant find much online about this and how I will be declared NED?

As always thank you!
  • My understanding is that other than mammogram & ultrasound on remaining breast/ breast tissue is the only regular testing. Medico's say that the evidence shows no benefit in other tests or imaging. Tumour markers are not reliable in breast cancer, until known to be metastatic, and even then best taken as pert of an overall picture with symptoms and scans.

The advice will generally be to see one of your team with any new symptoms/pain that last more than a couple of weeks and not releived by available medications (panadol & anti inflammatories)

The research suggests no survival benefit in regular scans as opposed to scans done in response to a new symptom
  • Hi @youngdogmum I had my surgery in August, I finished chemo early January and radiation 4 weeks ago. I’m booked in for my first mammogram and ultrasound in May. It seems like a long time to wait. Having TN breast cancer I keep wondering about the rest of my body. No mention of body scans.
  • Not for me - just rads, AI (for the next 5, 7 or 10 years) and then 12 month 3D mammo and u/s - but they were pretty convinced they'd got it all in surgery.
