Recovering after surgery

Hi everyone
I had my lumpectomy last Friday.
I’m going well with recovery but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this side effect after the anaesthetic.
I ended up having 2 operations- as I had a haematoma after the first op. So 2 anaesthetics.
I’m really congested, snoring heavily when asleep and kind of a whistling sound when I breathe and am lieing down.
I’m hoping it will just get better over the next few days.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks
Kathryn
  • Sorry to see you join this exclusive club, @Kathryn2412 .... the one you didn't expect to join .....

I always react badly to anaesthetic but it just makes me throw up.

The 'whistling' is a little concerning .... are you able to take a deep breath without hurting?  Lots of shallow breathing can cause congestion in the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia, hence the need to cough it up, if possible ....  Definitely chat to your Breast Care nurse, as this has happened within a week of your surgery - and should be addressed xx

take care & all the best with your recovery.

  • Hi @Kathryn2412.  I had the same bad luck with three surgeries in 4 days but do remember them getting me up and doing breathing and coughing exercises - and walking !
Perhaps raise your pillow/s slightly so you are not laying totally flat ?  You may be sleeping with your mouth open in order to get more air if you are congested.
Anaesthetics do knock the body around and take some getting over so allow yourself to rest and be spoilt.
Mention it to your medical team and bc nurse if you have one.
  • Hi @Kathryn2412
I would definately mention the congestion to your medical team ( do you have a breast care nurse?)
I remember my anaesthetist visiting  me in hospital the day after my mastectomy ( I always have a bad reaction to general anaesthetic including very bad nausea and I did mention this
    prior to the surgery)
She said to me it was important to cough up anything as pneumonia was a ( remote) potential outcome - don’t know if she was being overly dramatic but I made a big effort to cough which hurt a bit.
I was in hospital for 6 nights so was closely monitored and was discharged home with everything in order and I did have a bigger operation.
Anyway , as it’s not a public holiday today hopefully you can make contact with someone.
  • Welcome to the forum, although sorry you find yourself here, but you are in good company, and many helpful members who can give you support and comfort, so you don't feel so alone.

I have often felt very tired after an anesthetic for about 2 weeks, and I don't think it unusual to find we are snoring also.  I haven't felt congested as well though.  Maybe see if you can reach out to the medical team / breast care nurse to see what you can do for the congestion.

That was bad luck getting a haematoma after the first surgery.  Let's hope now you can continue to recover from your lumpectomy.  Take care and stay connected whenever you feel the need.  xx
