Reconstruction, revision and drains

Hello, I had my tissue expander swapped over to an implant in July however my surgeon has advised I may need revision surgery on Monday as necrosis (dead skin) has formed around the incision and the implant is now exposed. The revision will prevent any infection. As I have an important appointment next Friday that can't be changed, I want to make sure I will be able to make it.

During the surgery in July, my drain tubes were in for over a week before they were removed. Has anyone had revision surgery before and did you need drain tubes? I'm hoping the surgeon will tell me tomorrow that drain tubes won't be required this time.. Fingers crossed!

Thanks

Emma

  • Hi I'm new on here too and also a bit of a techno phobe so not sure what I'm doing when posting. Sorry to hear about your experience with reconstruction and great that you are going to get it fixed with a good surgeon. I'm having a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in the public system so fingers crossed.  I just read @HoneyBee's list of questions and I am going to take them with me when I next go to the reconstruction appointment as it is a bit intimidating when you are sat opposite the surgeon so thank you for that list.  I have been trying to join the Choosing Breast reconstruction Group and have typed in a couple of times on different days a paragraph in the "Why to do you want to join" box but I'm not sure if it worked and when I try to join it goes a grey colour? As I don't really know what I'm doing and I would really love to join this group and get support, find out what's involved and what to expect and some of the practical issues like do I need to buy special bras to wear after surgery etc and just what to expect really. I don't have a date for my operation yet but I think it will be sooner rather than later so I wanted to just get as much info as possible in the meantime. Appreciate any help with this. Thank you x
  • Hi @HoneyBee,
Here is a great sheet with a list of questions to ask. I am sorry you aren’t happy with your surgery, but it sounds like you have a great surgeon now. Are you a member of Choosing Breast reconstruction? There are lots of photos and information resources there.

  • Hi
I'm new to this, bit of a techno phobe.  my first post.
I had a left mastectomy 5 years ago followed by a reconstruction and then later a reduction on the right side.  All were done in the public system.  Not happy with the results of any of the three surgeries so seriously considering a bilateral breast revision surgery with a private surgeon.  Already seen a lovely surgeon  with a  fantastic reputation to make initial enquiries and going to see him again in July.  Just wanting to get information about it and trying to think of what questions to ask and consider.
  • I am at my first stage of considering reconstruction after 4 years since mastectomy and treatment.  I would love to hear opinions and advise anything. cheers Colette
  • I hope it has settled down now. I just had the expander swapped out for an implant in my right breast and some recon and augmentation in the left breast, but no drains .
  • I just had revision on Monday and have 1 drain in , didn't expect it but it's there until the drainage is less then 30mls. Probably be a week ☹️
  • Hi Emma - just come on to wish you well and say thank goodness it has been picked up and there is a solution, revision surgery.  I can remember my breast surgeon telling me he had plenty to work with!  Now reading your post I realise how fortunate that was.
    Take care from Christine xx
  • Hi Emma,
I have had revision surgery, but I did not have implants (my reconstruction surgery was tissue transfer TRAM), I had no drains and recovered quickly. This could however be different in the case of implants. It's a good question for the choosing breast reconstruction group. If you are a member just click on the groups link at the top of the page and pop your question in there, if you aren't a member just ask to join and leave a brief message and one of the admins will join you up. All the best for yiur surgery. Sorry you have to go through more. Hugs. Paula xx
  • Can't  help but just wanted to wish you luck with the revision surgery. Most annoying it has to happen.
