Radiation treatment query

Hello, I have found reading others posts so very helpful and I would like to ask a question. I started radiation today after two lots of surgery (no chemo needed, thank goodness) but feel a bit overwhelmed by it all and I would like to see if I can get some advice about how to deal with the radiation. I thought it would be easy after what I have been through (which is not too bad compared to others) but I found today so confronting. All the best to everyone I have really found the comments to be so very helpful and a great source of information.

  • Hi Tonya

That is great advice thank you!  I am so pleased to hear that you didn't get any blisters or burns.  I will follow your suggestions - did you do the salt bath as soon as you started radiation or once your skin started to burn?  Also what did you put in your salt bath?  I will get some of that Aloe Vera today.  I am worried about fatigue as I can't really take any more time off - I am the Director of a small compnay and I have lost so much time to this bc already that I need to make sure that I really work hard to protect the jobs of my team and the future of the company.  This with the kids (although they are teenagers)  and my husband working away is going to be a challenge.   I think that this is my real fear with radiation.  I will take the 'sail through with no problems' you said some have - fingers crossed.   But you know what in the end who cares - the most important thing is family and health.  Thank you Tonya x

  • I really only got tired about halfway through radiation.I actually took time off work so I didn't have to worry.Perhaps you could negotiate with your boss. Some ladies worked reduced hours after the halfway mark but I guess it depends on your job. I have fair skin but it never blistered or broke down, just got very red.As soon as I was zapped,I would apply Aloe Vera gel over my boob and then a soft hankie to protect clothes. That night I would soak in a warm salt bath, pat my boob dry and apply vit E cream. The staff are great and will advise you on creams/medications.The redness is like bad sunburn. When you have finished radiation,it will still keep working for a further 2 weeks so you may not improve till after that. However,we all react differently to treatments and you may sail through it with no problems.Hope it is getting easier for you. • Hi Rosanna

Thank you.  It was day two today and easier now I know what happens and how it all works.

Take care of yourself.  Best wishes

  • Hi Elly

So true you don't need to go through chemo meaning that your cancer cell was not agressive..........To me, Radio means nothing.

It may be a bit hard for you now, too hot in the weather, but don't be lazy to put cream as many times as you could, e-cream/soberlene... if aforddable, buy a rosehip oil to put on.  Still though...drink plenty of fluid and resting.

Mine finally.....I found no sweat from the surgical breast anymore.  Radio damaged the sweat gland.  But this was not big deal compare with "cancer"..

    Take care,

    Rosanna

  • Thanks Tonya for the reply. Yes I think I just felt so vulnerable and I really felt uncomfortable being so exposed. It took all my strength not to end up bawling. It sounds silly and I am not sure why. I am worried about managing with work and home if fatigue sets in and also the potential burns. I have super sensitive skin and just before I got diagnosed with bc I was told I have an autoimmune disease which really impacts on my skin. Is there anything in particular that you did that takes care of your skin? :) xx
  • I think it is very confronting at first but after awhile it becomes routine.I felt abit vulnerable lying there half exposed and then everyone running out of the room before the zapping started. Can you put it in words what worries you?I think it helps to vent your fears here. It's a safe, supportive place and we understand what you are going through.Tonya xx
