My journey so far...

I had my surgery on Thurs 31/3. The day took so long. I have recurring bursitis in my right shoulder and limited mobility in it, so having it held above my head for nearly 2 hrs for the radioactive dye was hell. I was exhausted and in agony. Then there was the surgery. I did not cope well with the anesthetic at all. Felt sick as a dog, so so nauseous. That was done last afternoon so basically slept all evening and only woke during the night. Still feeling nauseous but the pain didn't seem too bad.

I felt like I was holding it together pretty well until after breakfast. A freight train hit me and I burst in to tears. Two minutes later the surgeon arrived. Great timing. He was very sympathetic which was nice. He said surgery went well but had to dig deep for the lymph nodes. Not sure how many he took out, forgot to ask at the time. By the time I had seen all the doctors and had a shower I was feeling pretty tender and sore. Thank goodness for the boob cushion - my new best friend.

For the last 3 days I have basically been sitting around in my pj's not doing too much at all. I am very tender and sore. My hand has been feeling swollen and sore, not sure if from my shoulder being strained or something to do with the surgery. I have been doing the exercises constantly with minimal effect. My arm weighs a tonne and underneath is painful as well. My boob is a painful hard mass (to me). I see the surgeon tomorrow so will discuss this with him then. I am still nauseous and have a constant headache. I am really not enjoying all of this.

Fingers crossed for good results tomorrow. The last thing I want to face right now is more surgery. Then I'll deal with any treatment recommended. I am trying to be strong but am worn down already.

I am not expecting replies from this. I have read other people using this to help keep track of thier progress so I am trying to do the same. Thanks to anyone who reads this. I know there is so much support out there and you are all wonderful brave amazing women.

  • Hello Jacqui

I am just a year ahead of you having had my first breast cancer excision on 3 March 2015. ( and then the 2nd on 10 March 2015 which was a bit shattering!) Like you I suffered badly with a really painful shoulder and ended up with a frozen shoulder - even though I was diligent with the exercises. Thank goodness for the front opening bra from Berlei! Eventually though I ditched the bra entirely but found  it essential for support in the early months. I saw some professionals, physiotherapists etc until a physiotherapist friend told me that no matter what exercises and torture I put myself through the shoulder would take 12 to 18 months to put itself right. I stopped worrying about it there and then! That's not to say it did not remain painful and frustrating. However 13 months later I have 'almost' full movement and it is no longer painful. So hang in there!   Kind regards, Jenny

  • Glad to hear you are back in the land of the living. I had the nausea on my first op as well. It was days and days. My mum got me the Nurophen in gel capsules and I seemed to be able to take that better than pills with less tummy troubles. Healing does take time and 4 months later after all my chemo its still trying to sort itself out. All those little nerve endings jostling for position to get themselves fixed up takes a long time. No so much pain now though, just uncomfortable sometimes. It gets better, hang in there. XXXX

  • Oh you poor love!

youve been through the wringer and I'm not surprised that you are sore and feeling like you've had enough. Having a bit of a reaction to the anaesthetic just makes it worse.  I have no words of wisdoms except to be kind to yourself. Thinking of you and sending hugs. Karen xox

  • Hi Jacqui be kind to yourself and pace accordingly. We all heal at differing rates.

Enjoy the PJs they are good for the soul.

Sending you a virtual hug and fingers crossed for reasonable results .

    Christine xx

  • You have been through alot already....that's for sure... Make certain you write Fien any questions you have fur the surgeon, you'll be surprised how your mind suddenly goes blank!  Secondly I can't stress enough the importance of those excercises! Yes it's slow going, I could only just now get my arm above my head and my first lumpectomy surgery was  14 weeks ago! Good luck with your results...

Take time and listen to your body, don't expect to much of yourself!

  • Hi Jacqui, I had my bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction on the 23rd of March and see the doctor on thursday 7th april so he can make sure incisions and expanders and all are ok. My test tesults to lymph nodes they took out come back clear of cancer with clear margins which i was happy about i  cannot sleep on my side yet as it hurts to much. Starting to be able to llift my Rms a bit higher now i have still quite a bit of swelling that i have been putting icepacks on every so often still really sore. And to top things off i have to start my first lot of chemo on friday 8th so hopefully i will not get to sick from that. I just have to think i am lucky as i only need 4 treatments of chemo cancer gone now bit they do it for precaution. I have the brca1 gene to so when they found cancer in my left breast i said take both my breasts so i do not get cancer back i also had a hysterectomy in 2013 because of the brca gene. I hope u heal well and i know what u going through as i am going through healing after mastectomy to. If u need someone to talk to everyone on here is very nice we ate all a big family on here and ate willing to listen and reply to u. Have u in my prayers take care of yourself. xxxxxoooo
