Packitaxol side effects

hi there I finished chemo oct 16 after 4 rounds of AC and 4 rounds of paclitaxol chemo for triple neg breast cancer. No lymph nodes involved. I'm still having joint pain which started after the last dose of taxol and continues now. My hands are the worst especially at night they improve once I'm up and moving around and don't give me much grief through the day. I've tried all manner of pain killers with no relief and dencorub  arthritis cream also no good. It's fine when I'm still at night but when I move them they get really sore. Any suggestions ?? Was going to try pain away cream but it's $20 stub and don't want to buy it if it's no good.
And sometimes I feel stiff getting up with my knees but they aren't painful. Just wondering how long this might last for. I see oncologist next month for 3 month review. Also any hints for the hot flushes from the bloody menopause !! Margie

  • Its like we became old ladies virtually overnight with all these aches and I kind of resent it. Exercise is great but I have to take it slow first thing in the morning. Don't want to accidentally tear something lifting without a warm up first. Its not quite as bad lately since I have been taking bio magnesium. Hot flushes, I have a wet t towel with me always. Nasty in town if I have left home and forgotten it. I also take a water bottle and drink copious amounts of water.
  • Hi there ladies thanks heaps for your help and advice. I do sleep in aircon and that helps but when I'm out OMFG!! I wasn't sure if we are allowed to technically drop
the f bomb on this forum!! I will try the tumeric only took the Panadol osteo once as it didn't help. Maybe I need to take it more regularly. I do exercise every day and that does help and will try the swimming. Am seeing ex phys this week. Was shitting myself I had a recurrence but am relieved you guys still have some issues with it. Although really wish none of us had any of it. Thanks heaps again.  Margie
  • Margie are you on any other medication currently? I know being 1yr post chemo, the pain has been quite bad, Ive come to live with it plus Arimidex has made it worse. Exercise Physiologist is helping alot now, but on a bad day I take Panadol osteo and it helps. Ohhh Menopause hmmm, Ive found its starting to settle now still hot flushes but everything steadily gets better, takes a damn long time though! Hugs Melinda xo
  • The flushes are cruel. I thought I'd finished with them, then I had my ovaries removed...My best 'hack' is keep a couple of really soft old towels by the bed and put one over your pillow. You can mop up the mess and keep your pillows from getting soaked then replace them during the night. I seem to be able to do a swap in my sleep.
  • Hi Margie,
It’s been nearly 12 months since finishing chemo and my joints are still sore, especially legs. I started taking tumeric tabs 8 weeks ago and it's helped alot but does take a good month to start to feel any improvement. Also I found over the counter panadeine helpful on the really bad days.
Menapause!!!! Oh it's the worst..... I love my air conditioning and fan.... The only positive thing I can say is that you do get used to it even though we really don't want to.....
    Wishing you the very best

  • I've had the joint pain but put mine down to aramatose inhibitor. The only thing that has helped mine is exercise, particularly in water.  As I've slowly increased my exercise I get less and less pain. I'm now 5 months post last taxol but continue with herceptin and letrozole.
  • Hi Margie
I hear you! I too have triple negative and have just had 10th taxol after 4 rounds of AC chemo. I have joint pain especially in knees and one elbow which drives me mental!! I take panadol osteo which takes the edge off but the only thing that really works for me is movement. I walk every day which eases things and find I feel better after exercise. If I sit for long periods or first thing in the morning I am really stiff and sore but once moving things ease up. I also take wild krill oil which seems to help me. I call it my joint oil!
As for the (!) flushes I sleep under a cotton blanket in an air conditioned room with one leg out and try to wear only natural fibres. They still happen but I dont drench the bed like i did initially! Hot weather stress and too much chocolate makes mine worse but being well hydrated and keeping cool helps me a bit.
Hope you find some relief xx
