Overnight hospital?

Having a single mastectomy with a sentinel node out and a couple more axillary nodes just in case at about lunch time Monday when I will really be starving, and I have been told I should only be in the hospital overnight and then released to go home the next day after the breast nurse educates my husband and I on drains maintenance etc.

It is just over night isn't it? They aren't having me on and going to keep me in there days or anything?

There is only 2 ways I would stay longer as I loathe hospitals and that's if I am at deaths door or very heavily sedated.

Pleased for you that your op is over, and that you are ok, despite a bit of nausea. Give yourself time to recover, and follow the physiotherapist and nurse instructions as Summer recommended. Sending you a big cuddle, proud of you, Trace ????????

  • Hi Brenda

WOW - see, you worried for nothing.  Glad all has turned out OK.  Do the exercises and don't do things you've been told to avoid.  Let others help you !!!

Keep in touch re your progress and come back at any time you have queries.

  • Oh I thought I replied but I didn't to the post bit at the bottom sorry. Yes I was less than 24hours and home again. First day home is lovely as you are all full of pain meds. Today was a challenge as I had terrible nausea. Not sure if it was the radioactive dye still being dispelled as a lovely green in the toilet bowl or the panadols on a worried stomach.

In the end I got on to my breast nurse who said I was ok to take an alka-seltzer and that settled my stomach enough to hold in breakfast and take some nurophen afterwards.

All good now and so relieved to have the cancer gone. Nice neat job too and I shook my surgeons hand and thanked him. He is a quiet man and got a little embarrassed in front of the trainee doctors but I think he was pleased I thanked him.

  • Hi Brenda just a quick hello

Hopefully the experience was as straightforward as can be and you're on the feeling better tram.

    Take care

  • Hi Brenda:) I had single mastectomy and single node out.Surgery was at 4 pm on a Tuesday and I went home on Friday morning.I was really well, but I wanted to be able to shower myself before I went home, and because I went private my doctor was very happy for me to stay.Even so,I feel that one night is very quick. Stay as long as you can ,it's always a bit more difficult when you first get home.Cheers Robyn xox

  • Hi Brenda wishing you well for your op.

We all have different experiences of hospital stays. Overnight sounds good but as others have eluded it will  come down to reaction after surgery. Pack an extra set of pjs just in case.

    Good luck.

    Take care

  • Hi Brenda, gosh that's quick.I was in for 3 days with my mastectomy.I had strong painkillers the next day and was still on a drip.I could hardly get out of bed! My blood pressure was abit low (blood loss) and I felt light headed. My dressing and drain was checked frequently for any bleeding. So don't be disappointed if you have to stay abit longer- it would be in your best interest.Best wishes and hugs for Monday.xx

  • Hi Brenda, overnight is a big ask for a mastectomy. I had a large lumpectomy with plastics repair. I was so high on pain meds that when they said go home the next day I just said yes - I would have said yes to anything. I'm a nurse so didn't want to be a patient. After I got home and the pain meds wore off I really regretted going home so soon. Take your time and don't rush it, you'll know when you can cope with daily living at home.

I went public and they fed me a late dinner following afternoon surgery. Praying all goes well for you on Monday and sending you hugs,

    with love, Tracey

Hi Brenda, if they say that it's overnight, more than likely it will be. I hope that it all goes well for you. Make sure that you order a glass of red wine with your evening mel, medicinal purposes only lol. Sending you a big cuddle, and good vibes to make it successful, Trace ??????

  • Hi Brenda

Monday will come and go quickly.

Whilst 'they' expect you to only stay one night, if your body does not react as they expect it to they will allow you to stay longer so they can be sure your blood pressure, wounds and drains are all OK before you go home.

If that is the case, sit back and relax as you don't want to get home and have to go back in with complications.

Don't worry, they will feed you appropriately as soon as they feel you are ready !  If you are going 'private' they will try to get you what you feel like eating - not sure about in 'public' - but ask.

If your husband is unsure ask the discharge planner to get the district nurse to come in daily once you are home.  Take any help offered as you can always cancel if you feel it is not required.

From another who is missing 'Miss Rightie' - all the very best.  Personal message me if you would like to talk more.

    Big hugs each day

    Summer  :-)
