Operation Day

Today, Wednesday 27th of November, 2013. I am headed to the local hospital to have a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy performed on my left breast. I have never been in hospital before (except for visiting). This is a whole new experience. I have been extremely happy with the staff at the hospital during my visits. I have the second op of the day with an overnight stay. I can't sleep at the moment. Very anxious I guess, but glad I have found it early. My partner has a job interview today so hoping all things go very well. Xxxx

  • It has been a while since I have been on here. Firstly I would like to wish all ladies on here a very happy new year. Let's fight the fight! My results are that I have a clear margin on the cancer that was removed from my breast. I had 23 nodes removed 1 was positive. So I need chemo, followed by radiotherapy then hormone therapy. My brain has been crazy too as I have now met the person I would like have children with but now may have trouble conceiving as I will be 45ish by the time I will finish the tamoxifen. Have been to a fertility dr but the chances that I can conceive even if eggs are collected and the embryo's are frozen are very low due to my weight, the fact that I have been taking deparavera, and also my age. At this stage we have made the decision not to go ahead with freezing the embryos. A very hard choice. Plus I would have had to go on more hormones to bring on ovulation. Now just waiting my oncologist appointment to give me my schedule. I am hoping I can recover ok and fit it in with my work schedule. My partner did not get the job he applied for which sux in a way but has also been good as I have not been given the clearance to drive yet. Does anyone know if he could get a carers pension or something as he helps me from making meals to getting dressed and showering to driving me everywhere? Also wondering what type of sickness benefits I would get if I can't work full time due to illness? I hope everyone had a good Christmas and wish you all a great new year. Thanks for reading - sorry it is very long xxxx Trina xxxx
  • Sometimes things don't go as planned but I hope all goes well from here on. Hang in there and keep us updated.
  • Thought I would post back re: op. Firstly I can't thank all ladies on here that have messaged me. This site is pretty great. The hospital let my partner stay with me until I was taken away for the op. His job interview went pretty good will hopefully know more on Monday. So the op went well. When I woke up I noticed I had a drain attached. Which I thought was weird as my surgeon said does not use drains. I thought something went wrong. When the drs saw me the next morning they explained to me that the blue dye would not travel so they had to remove all the nodes. That is why the drain was there. Did not really have too much discomfort. They checked on me in the afternoon and I had to stay another night. I had a very nice room mate and we got along really well. We did our physio together. On my third morning I. Hospital I was told that my fluid from my drain was still too much and it should be clearer. I needed a another night for it to come down. My room mate was getting discharged today. Felt kind of weird. I remember looking at the cut under my arm and freaking out a bit about it being so big. After our showers this morning my room mate and I compared our wounds. She had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I had a lumpectomy with full node removal. I must say for a woman with large breasts they did a great job on my boob. Later that day my surgeon came up and looked at my drain and it was clearing up. She was happy to discharge me but I had to take the drain with me. I was so excited but a little scared at the same time. I had a great sleep my first night home. Second night is a little harder. I have some nurses coming to see me in the morning to help me with my drain. In a bit more pain but glad to be home. Stayed at the parents tonight but having trouble sleeping. Can't wait to have this drain out. Night all xxxx

  • all my good wishes for a successful day. I had no troubles at all with that op - same as you - and recovered quickly.

Best of luck too for your partner's job.

  • I had mine last wednesday. I am recovering well. It may be daunting to be in hospital for the first time and for something this serious but be sure that you will have the support you require. I had my husband and daughter with me who kept me entertained until I was wheeled to theater. If you don't have anyone with you keep yourself busy by watching or browsing through fun website or shows.

I have an appointment with my specialist tomorrow to get my sentinel node biopsy result and treatment plan. I am nervous but I am planning to go on a lunch time cruise and some retail therapy ,for a family member's wedding, with my sister afterwards no matter what the result may be.

Keep positive and I hope all goes well for you.

  • It is good that you won't have to wait long for your op. The iPod sounds like a great idea. Hope your partner's job interview goes well. It is quite a day for both of you. Let us know how you go. Take care. Deanne xxx
