One breast or two?
I was diagnosed with HR+ breast cancer (Right breast only) about 3 weeks ago. Fortunately I was able to see a wonderful surgeon within 10 days of diagnosis. A lumpectomy was not an option so I have to have the Breast removed. I have asked for a double mastectomy because I have extremely large breasts and the left breast is larger and heavier than the right breast. At first I THOUGHT I was ok with just one breast being removed. After giving it some more thought I realised that I am NOT! I have bipolar type 2 Disorder and severe depression and I know that I will not be able to cope with just 1. Breast reconstruction is not an option (nor do I want it)because of safety risks so I will be left with a large, heavy and sagging breast. How do I get a prostheses to match that? I will be so out of balance I will like the leaning tower of Pisa!
Besides, I will be 50 this year and it is not as if I need them anymore! My kids are 18 &15 & a bit old for breastfeeding :)
My choice, right? Wrong. My surgeon, my breast cancer nurse and my psychologist have all had to recommend that my case reviewed by a medical assessment team at the hospital where I am to have my surgery. I now have to wait for my 2nd appointment with my surgeon to find out the answer. Will it be yay or nay? Why is it not my choice straight up?? Is this the norm and if so why? Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this one :)
