News from the front

Well, it's been eight days since my bilateral mastectomy and I'm feeling great. I'm still in hospital and hopefully the fourth and final drain comes out tomorrow.

There's a seroma on the drain-free side but with massage and showering it's draining well.

My surgeon has cleared me to start yoga once the drain is out. I've been walking around and around the ward every day to get used to the changes in my body. Having about two kilos removed from my chest has effected my balance and my posture. I'm focusing on standing tall with my shoulders back.

I love not having to wear a bra! I realise how constricting it's been to have that wide band of elastic around my chest.

At this stage it looks like I'll be home on Tuesday and ready to start my new breast-free cancer-free life.

So excited!

Meg

  • You look great - and very athletic!  The freedom feels good, doesn't it? I laughed at the downward dog comment - so true.  I was back at yoga about a month after surgery - just found salute to the sun a bit difficult at first.  You are right about exercise, but you and I and Robyn are believers in move it or lose it.  Hope you get home asap.  Knew you would come  through with flying colours. Congratulations!   Michelle xx

  • It really does make such a huge difference. I'm feeling fit and well and looking forward to finally being home in a couple of days.

I fear I may have gained the weight I lost in surgery though. They fatten you up like a Christmas turkey! Breakfast, then morning tea, then lunch, then afternoon tea, then dinner and then another round of the tea cart before bed. I'm learning to say 'no' to the cakes and biscuits, having the fruit instead of the dessert and trying to figure out what the healthiest meal choices might be. It will be good to be able to cook my own food again.

  • When I was in hospital I used to walk around the ward all the time too.I would see others always in bed, when I was sure most of them could get up! It made me all the more determined! One of the nurses used to tell me that I was really helping myself by walking all the time .I hope that you continue to improve Meg,and I look forward to regular progress updates!Cheers xoxRobyn
