Hi, my name is Maria and this is one group I never expected to be joining! I was diagnosed with an early stage breast cancer 2 weeks ago. It is 14mm, grade 2 invasive ductal cancer of the left breast and I am due to have a wide local excision with sentinel node biopsy surgery in 4 days time on the 2nd of September in Adelaide followed up with 4-6 weeks of radiotherapy. I am trying to stay positive for myself and family about the outcome but it's the process that is so daunting. The waiting and wondering how I will cope with the pain side of it. Not looking forward to the radioactive injection I will need the day before the op. Any suggestions on how best to cope. I do have a very supportive family and group of friends but it's still only me that has to go through all this!

  • Hi Maria welcome to the site, one of the best places to visit

Take it one day at a time and one process   at a time. It is very full on when you are first diagnosed. No matter what treatment is ahead. Have you or you breast care nurse orderd the my journey kit, lots of information. Any surgery is scary and yes the neddle for the dye is not pleasant but it is doable. If you can take someone with you. I had my sister and husband ,looking back nothing funnier than them both taking turns massaging my boob. Jump on the site, alot of pople on the site at different stages. Good luck for your surgery and what is to come sending you a hugxxx

  • Hi Maria and  welcome to the online network:):) Stay connected on here and you will get through this just fine! Almost 2 years ago now ,I had the same diagnosis as you,but mine was slightly larger.I had a sentinel node biopsy and mastectomy, followed by chemo.I am feeling fantastic now.Try not to worry about the sentinel node biopsy. The injection beforehand ,I found, was not really painful, and like you,I had been worrying myself about it in the days leading up to it.Just try to remember that breast cancer these days is VERY treatable, and most ladies go on to lead long, healthy lives.Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common of the breast cancers, and also not as prone to recurrence like some of them.Keep busy, and try not to worry about things before they happen. We are here if you need to chat or ask questions.Cheers Robyn xox
