Metal Clip left after Aux. Dissection

After surgery in May this year for Aux. Dissection (had Aux. Clearance in 2014) checkup revealed some tenderness and oncology registrar thought it might be another lymph node. After CT Scan and Bone Scan on Monday had Ultrasound to the area under my armpit today. Biopsy performed and Dr. believes cause of tenderness from metal clip. I don't have a follow-up appointment until 13/12. Has anyone else had anything like this?

  • All the best when you see the gp @tigerbeth .... pm sent re shoulder
  • Don't know if I have clips  but I still have a frozen shoulder !! Hurts like hell at times but the pain is starting to ease up a bit .Movement is progressing after exercises from the physio but not very quickly !!
Pain in my boob is worrying me so hopefully I 'll see my gp tomorrow & get him to check it out ! If its not one thing its another !!
  • Thanks @arpie for your suggestions and for the knowledge that it has not been one of those horrible "surgery gone wrong" stories, and @AllyJay - all those clips! Glad things are now better with your shoulder.
  • Hi there @arpie...yeah...glow in the dark... As it happened, I was having physio and then hydrotherapy on my left shoulder for a hardened and shortened pectoral muscle. Amongst other exercised, there were some that involved pushing pieces of pool noodle under the water to the front, then the side, then sweeping across the water. Well...ring a ding ding....this caused severe pain in my right shoulder. I was told to "Just push through" that it would loosen up. Nahh...it didn't. It siezed up completely and was subsequently diagnosed as adhesive capsulitis...frozen shoulder. A rotator cuff tear was ruled out. Well, the agony!!! I was in excruciating pain even at rest, and the slightest movement of the upper arm had me gasping in pain. Because I've been on warfarin for 20+ years, I can't take non steriodal anti inflammatories and become violently sick with targin, endone and the like. I was eventually seen by the pain clinic ( a professor) and was given Fentanyl patches (kiddy strength), which I used for about four months. Stopped them myself thereafter, and now it is pain free, but still very stiff..almost two years so far now from the start. Hopefully it will continue to improve.
  • WOW!!  That's a BUNCH of them @AllyJay !!   I think mine were titanium too!!  You lit up like a Xmas Tree!!

Re your frozen shoulder - has it been resolved?  I had one 15 years ago (almost couldn't raise it at all) & had it manipulated under a block anaesthetic (I was awake but the whole arm was dead) and recovered really well from it (no surgery.)
  • Not too sure if that is a marker of some sort, or perhaps titanium clips used to clamp off blood vessels during surgery. These titanium clips were used in me during surgery, and I only found out that they were there when I had an x ray for a frozen shoulder. When I questioned my surgeon about it at a check up, she brushed it off and said that they were very commonly used to clamp off bleeding vessels, that they were made of titanium, and would pose no problems for future MRIs, CT scans or airport metal detectors. Sheesh   I was ticked off that I wasn't told, but that is another story.
  • I have 2 little metal clips left in the area where the tumour was removed .... they should show up on any mammogram & ultrasound.   My surgeon told me he was putting them in (they are tiny) and they are just used as markers for future reference.

Are you able to make contact with your Surgeon and/or Breast Care nurse about it @Renatha for reassurance, even prior to your Dec appointment?    I am sure they are not meant to cause any discomfort at all!  They also 'mark' the area re scarring, I think, for ultrasound reference.

I hope your biopsy is clear & that the tenderness resolves itself!  Funnily enough - I was a bit tender last week leading up to my ultrasound & I asked that they look for a seroma 'just in case' (there was none) ..... also had those shooting pains that I had during Rads .....  All good now tho!
