Is Herceptin efficient without chemotherapy?

Hi all , I'm er2 positive I had 1cm aggressive tumor removed a moth ago ,estrogen positive , nods clear, doctors  suggested  chimo+herseptin, Im  terrified from the chimo and want to consider just herceptin +radiotherapy and hormone therapy. I know there is no research
Did anyone went that path?

  • Herceptin is only approved for use in Australia for free if you have chemo also...as the clinical trials showed this to be the most effective treatment. I had ACT-H chemo for stage 1 grade 3 Es+ Her2+ breast cancer. Offered as this is the best outcome results looking at 10 year survival (with either tamoxifen or an aramatose inhibitor also). It really made a huge difference. Maybe discuss tbe differences with your oncologist, they can show you on a tool called predict the difference with or without chemo.

I can't say I enjoyed chemo but I got through it with limited issues  (herceptin caused me more issues in the end). My decision was based purely around going in for a cure...you get one shot....and I didn't want to have regrets 2 years later not trying to do the best I could for that.  Kath x
  • I've not heard of just Herceptin and not chemo as the ladies said, its used in conjunction. I did 4.5 months of chemo, thing is nobody can tell you how you will be. Your body will dictate how you are, I was very upbeat and positive but unfortunately for me Im drug sensitive so didnt cope. It affects people differently and you have no way of knowing how you will be. It is doable, I was petrified to do it, but I did and pushing 2 years on now finally getting my life back. Melinda xo
  • My oncologist said the same, and the benefits with chemo are high. I am on herceptin, with 2 rounds of chemo to go, then I will continue with Herceptin for 17 more rounds every 3 weeks. I was also terrified with chemo at the beginning not knowing anything but after my two rounds, coming up to my 3rd on Friday, it is doable physically & I got through it, as much as you can get side effects. But in saying that every individual is different. I'm glad in a way I'm doing chemo because I know these treatments are giving me the best chance to kill every single unwanted bad cell in my body. if there is any. I'm getting all, chemo, radiation, Herceptin, possible hormone treatment also. I agree with @Afraser it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
  • No, I didn't go on that path because Herceptin is more effective when used in conjunction with chemo. Chemo's reputation is well deserved in some cases but not in all. It may not be as bad as you fear. Your oncologist is proposing this regimen to give you the very best chance of a full recovery. We all know how daunting it sounds at the very beginning, but many of us now look back and it seems not so bad, and best of all, a long time ago.
Best wishes for your research and your outcomes, whatever treatment you choose.
