Interesting Discussion with receptionist when booking Mammogram & ultrasound 12 month check up

I am due my '12 month since detection' mammogram & ultrasound checkup - and rang the radiology centre that I prefer to use (rather than the Taree one that didn't pick up my tumours, even with the location pinpointed by the GP!)

4-5  months back, I had a 'scare' in my other boob - and had a bilateral MG & US then.  SO, still having the 12 month referral, I rang to book it in.  The receptionist said that I may as well not have the mammogram, as it was unlikely to have changed in the 4-5 months since the previous one - just go with the Ultrasound.  It made sense to me at the time (specially as I have dense breast tissue & the MGs haven't shown tumours in the past.)  However, the specialist US lady I preferred wasn't 'available' for an appointment at that time .... so I rang again last week & am now booked in for both MG & US next Thurs.  (I must have got a different receptionist!)

In thinking back to what the receptionist said that the MG wasn't 'necessary' ...... is that her job?

When I thought about it even more - I realised that I had already had a MG just 4 months before my lumps were physically detected last Nov ..... so there WAS a change within that time frame (altho I do concede that the MG most likely didn't pick up the tumours in my breast due to the dense tissue!)

Technically, I still believe that MGs aren't very effective in detecting anomalies in my own breast tissue .... but I am not so sure that the receptionist should be suggesting to clients not to go ahead with it??

What do you reckon?

  • That's good news @arpie.. Whatever happened , you can put it all behind you and enjoy your good news
  • Thanks, @Blondy -  Checked the report today with my GP & all good.  Some fatty tissue that they noted 'to keep an eye on' - but otherwise all good.

To be honest - I am not really sure if it 'was' a receptionist (they didn't identify themselves)  - it may have been one of the radiographers just taking the call ......  but I definitely agree - a receptionist shouldn't be making 'calls' like that.

  • The US seem to show a lot more than the MG but that's only my opinion  I had my 12 month MG at 11 months with US  3 months since I've had strange changes in my breast and went back to my surgeon who said it was all normal and to do with the radiation  It put my mind at rest but she said to get an US and MG in March which will be 7 months and I'm ok with that.. Regardless of what you were eventually given and told, by a proper health professional  I don't think it is the receptionists job to give that kind of advice and could have dire consequences if continued.
  • WOW!!  VERY INTERESTING ..... it seems that the receptionist was right!!

When I went for my checkup last Friday, the Ultrasound lady came in & explained that it was too soon since my previous 3D mammogram to have another one, so would only go with the Ultrasound!

She explained that she didn't want me to have any more radiation than I already had ..... so tried to contact my Rad Onc to see if she still wanted both MG & US .... but as she couldn't  get an answer, just went with the US at this point in time!

I see my GP tomorrow for the report on the US.
  • Best intentions. But no, it's not her job. Just as it's not the job of the chemist to suggest a generic prescription when they don't really know much about it except for the active ingredient being the same. The intention is pure (to save you money), just as the receptionist is providing information which is frequently correct. But not always. No point shooting the messenger, but worth remembering that we are not all the same and pushing the point where required.
