Getting started with Radiation therapy

Hi everyone,

This is my first post... I am a 47 yo single mother of two beautiful girls just started on this journey. I have had two surgeries, and the pathology looks promising in that it was localised in the breast.  I am looking at starting Radiotherapy now and was hoping to get some advice.

I need to keep working - and I need to choose a hospital.  I work at Docklands, and live in McKinnon and every second week have my girls with me. My work is really flexible which is great - but I just dont know what to expect with all of this. Is it easier to slip out during the day and get the treatment done at maybe Freemasons - or would it be better to get morning treatment at maybe Moorabbin then go to work from there? How long does it all take and how will I feel afterward?

Any advice would be fantastic.. 6 weeks seems a long time so it would be good to try and make some good choices now.

Thanks everyone

  • Hi Jenny I have finished now, I was lucky and really only had two days of discomfort. It looks awful, but doesn't hurt. The other thing that helped me was to get crop top bra's from target as they have no underwire and are so comfortable. Hope it continues to go well for you. Kathy
  • Hi Kathy

Thanks so much for your message.  I have just started  - Day 3 and so far so good.  I am going to Moorabbin in the mornings, and I am getting into work pretty quickly so its OK. I have been putting the Moo Goo on for weeks now - thanks for the tip.  What soap did you use? My skin is red already which worries me a bit - have a long way to go yet.

Is your treatment finished now? How have you been?

    Take care

    Jenny

  • Hi Jenny How is radiation treating you? Hope all is going well for you. Kathy
  • Hi, I am half way through radiation treatment at Moorabbin. My strategy is to have treatment after work. I leave work at 4.00 pm and my appointments are 4.30, 4.45 or 5.00pm. I like that I don't have to stress about them running late and being late for work. There is great free parking in the streets either side of the hospital, it is 2 hour free parking. I have had 15 treatments and so far so good, no side effects. A lady at treatment recommended buying Moo Goo from a health food shop. It is a safe moisturiser and it goes on more easily then the one they give you. Good luck! Kathy
  • Thanks Marls - thats really helpful - and I will definitely start on the moisturing soon.  Everything moves just so quickly doesn't it !  Its good to receive a recommendation anyway - the morning does seem the sensible choice, except that I am pretty useless in the morning, and I doubt very much I could get myself as well as my two girls moving early !  Good luck to you for the rest of your treatment - hope everything goes well.

    Take care,

    Jenny

  • hi there, my advice is to choose where you will have radiation to be close to work if possible--what about peter mac in the city? that is public and the waiting list is ..difficult ..but specialised and no out of pocket expenses.  i went private for surgery but i would go public for radiation or only go private if no public nearby to work

i caught public transport which i found really helpful as made journey less stressful, no parking and either walk to work or if feeling tired, caught public transport to work.

as advised--treatment is 20-30 mins top and that includes waiting time, derobing and get lined up--treatment--and then out again; again my expeirnece of peter mac-not in the city--was very smooth and accomodating my prefered times etc

i found having two weeks off about 5-6 weeks into it very helpful too--

  • Welcome to this site, I am sorry you are having to go through this journey but I wish you well. I have found coming on here to be invaluable and a great source of advice from Ladies who are going through the same treatments. I am receiving my radiotherapy at Moorabbin and only have 6 treatments to go. The staff are wonderful and try and accommodate work commitments as much as possible. In my experience I find that the earlier the appointment there is less chance of being delayed. They give you your appointments on the Friday for the week ahead, so it's easier to plan ahead. Parking at Moorabbin is no problem, cost is $9.00 for the first hour. I have found I am in and out within an hour. The treatment itself only takes a couple of minutes, it's the getting changed into your gown, the Therapist setting you up for your treatment and then getting changed into your clothes. I can't believe how quickly the weeks have passed. I got tired in the third week, so you have to be kind to yourself Jenny. Start moisturising your skin a couple of weeks before your treatment, it really helps, I got this information from the lovely ladies on this site. Take care, Marls
