First Mammogram with Lymphoedema in breast

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone in this group has LD in their breast and how they went with mammograms?  My first one after initial surgery, radiation etc is scheduled for early October and I had hoped by now the swelling, tenderness etc would have settled but it is starting to look like I will have it permanently despite massages, compression, taping etc.

I don't want to wuss out as prior to BC a mammogram didn't worry me, but some days it is really sore and tender.

Thanks, Kari

  • Hi Kari

my advice is to tell the radiographer before they start of your concerns. Ask them to use the hand dial on the machine rather than the foot pedal, this gives them more control and a slower compression. I had a lady who was particularly unsympathetic resulting in me fainting with the pain she caused. Later in the day a different lady then redid my mammogram and it did not hurt at all! She didn't even compress the breast as much.

So dont worry speak up all the best.

  • Hi Kari, this week I had my 1st mammogram since my diagnosis this time last year. I had 3 nodes removed a lumpectomy, 30 radiation treatments and now on femara.  My breast in one quadrant no where near the scar was very sore at my six month check up and the Dr said it may improve with time. I had the mammogram before I saw him this week and it was tolerable but quite sore. The lady doing it was very understanding but after, my breast felt like it was burning and I got the sharp pains back that you get while it is healing. Nurophen fixed it and now 2 days later its not too bad. When I saw the Dr and he felt the area I was very tender and jumped and he asked how did I manage the mammogram! That's when he told me I had LD of the breast and suggested I try some laser treatments and massage to break up the fibrosis caused by the LD. Not sure when I can get treatment cause it's 3 hours away and in two weeks we head off on holiday to Victoria and I'm not sure if I want to do it before we go cause at least it's manageable like it is and I wonder if it has to get worse before it gets better. Have you had laser treatment?

  • Hi Kari

I have mild lymphodeama in my breast and recently had a mammogram. My scar line is also still tender after 2 years. The lady doing the mammogram was wonderful and constantly asked if I was ok and said if at any time it was too painful she would stop. Look it was uncomfortable but not as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck. Karen xox
