exemestane side effects

Hi
My onc has changed my Meds after a recurrence after 5years on arimidex.I’m really concerned after reading the listed side effects.Mainly the weight gain as it is a steroid A1 and most worrying That it can cause male side effects like acne and facial hair.I probably sound vain but I really can’t deal with any more  disfiguring body changes .
Any info appreciated
  • I've been taking it for two years now after finding the side effects of Letrazole and Aromasin intolerable. I haven't grown a beard or broken out in spots. It's no walk in the park, though regularly walking anywhere makes a terrific difference to the aches and pains.

Regarding the steroid component, I have put on weight but I've also had my ovaries out and we know that crashing into menopause aint usually great for the figure. I have been this heavy before, but my shape now is rather different from what it's been in the past. Previously it was all in my legs and my arse which was balanced by a flat stomach, now I have a substantial spare tyre which i loathe with a passion but can't seem to shift.

On the upside, I've resumed weight training which always used to make me muscle up anyway. Now I have the mother of all muffin tops, but I've got arms like a shearer. I find that oddly comforting given I've spent the last three years feeling feeble and depleted. Maybe it's the steroid additive (which is negligible anyway) or maybe it's genetics and I'd have been in the same condition anyway.

I had a recurrence too and am desperate to avoid another so I'll keep swallowing the wretched pill. It seems like the lesser of two evils. Or many evils. Mxx
  • Hi Zoffiel
Thankyou so much for your response.I feel a lot better about changing. When I got home  and read the list  of side effects I totally freaked out. I was on Arimidex for 5 years before recurrence .I gained 10kilos had mild bone pain for the first year and insomnia was the pits.
I’ve just had a months break post surgery and feel great,Have actually slept really well for the first time in years..Onc did give me the choice of Tamoxifen ,so not sure now which is the lesser of two evils.Blood clots and stroke aren’t that appealing either.

LOL, I’m rocking the muffin top as well 😂,apparently estrogen suppresses the enzyme LPL activity on fat cells ,so no estrogen = MuffinTop.
I enjoy weights too,They really helped me regain strength  both physically and mentally. Can’t lift atm as I’ve had the muscle removed down to the chest wall but will definitely get back into it .
This sure is a journey,Take time to do nice things for yourself .🙏🙏
    thanks Again
    xx

  • I was on exemestane for 4 years and my main side effects were quite bad but I know taking Effexor helped with my joint aches & hot flushes
It's all still such a small gain for what can be intense side effects
I'm 6 years in the clear and just moved from exemestane to Tamoxifen because my bone health is so bad

Keep an eye on your bone density also
I hope it's kinder to you
  • Thankyou Katy,
I was on Arimidex it caused joint pain  insomnia and slight weight gain, not sleeping was a killer after 5 years. I had a small tumor recurrence late last year , more surgery and was put on Tamoxifen.I had the worst headaches daily which is why it was changed to Exemestane .After much  research and feedback I have now decided to ditch the exemestane ,go back on the Tamoxifen and take pain relief for the headaches.I’ve decided that quality of life is far more important than taking medications that make me feel like shit.
My bone density did drop slightly on Arimidex even with taking Caltrate and Vitamin D.So hopefully will improve on Tamoxifen .
Take Care and thanks for your reply.
